33. One of my first lessons on identity after moving to the Mainland was from a Jewish friend.

This was 1966 or so. Toby was my age, we ended up renting an apartment together for awhile. Everything I thought I knew ... did not come from personal contact, because Jews were a vanishingly small minority in the Hawai'ian Islands.

Toby set me straight on the subject of "race" as pertaining to Jews. As far as she was concerned, being Jewish was a race. We had quite the 18-year old argument about the meaning of "race" vs "religion."

As far as someone else I know is concerned, it's an ethnicity, but it is also an immutable identity. Falling away doesn't change that. Conversion doesn't change that. Being an atheist doesn't change that. Being Buddhist while Jewish is is something a surprising number of Americans do.

He was a bit surprised to move from NYC to CA and transmogrify into an Anglo. But that was exterior label coming from outside, not what's inside. Like an EEO form.
