2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA modest proposal for tonight's roll call vote, to show maximum support for both Bernie and Hillary.
Have the super delegates abstain on the first ballot, so that the pledged delegates can vote for the candidate they were elected to vote for and the progressive wing of the party can demonstrate its support, but the nomination goes to a second ballot.
Have everyone vote unanimously for Hillary on the second ballot to make the strongest possible show of party unity and support for the nominee.
Yeah, I know its not realistic, but I can still dream.

(3,860 posts)Now you've got me thinking about Hillary beginning her acceptance speech with "Everyone, look under your seats".

(4,311 posts)We are making history tonight. I don't want that delayed or messed with. I want a strong, uplifting, unified, beautiful show of support for our wonderful nominee.

(4,311 posts)The media will spin that as we can't unite behind one candidate and had to go to a second ballot.

(9,527 posts)Clinton supporters didn't need an homage like this. The small subset of Sanders supporters who have been booing good people like Warren, Cummings and Sanders wouldn't be won over by this gesture given that they jeered Sanders for his lack of purity.

(11,605 posts)I think it would help if the Bernie delegates were reminded that Hillary won a clear majority of pledged delegates too. It would make it harder to claim that the vote was rigged.

(5,648 posts)if the super delegates didn't exist Sanders would have been beaten long ago. The super delegates were the only thing that allowed Sanders to continue his campaign as long as he did. Now please understand that I have absolutely no problem with what he did, but put let's not continue the farce the super delegates somehow polluted the process for Sanders, because objectively that simply wasn't the case.
But you know what, we are wasting out time writing about this - it simply is not going to happen.

(4,451 posts)This was not close. It was a landslide won by Clinton. In 2008 Barack Obama won by less than 1% and Hillary did not demand all this special treatment. Wowza.

(42,862 posts)But ... according to more than one "advocate" and excuse-maker posting here, we should be more patient with them to help them get over their loss. We just need to give them room and time to accept things. We shouldn't rush it, because that could drive them away. Because of their passions, it's just taking them longer to disengage.
Well, to that I can only respond with:

(42,862 posts)... he really did take too long in conceding defeat. He kept plying them with this "all-the-way-to-the-convention" stuff, and many of these delegates must have truly believed that the SD's would suddenly switch to support Bernie. His "she's-not-qualified" rhetoric didn't help either (except for the fact that he gave Trump some new talking-points.)
Not only had they convinced themselves of the fantasy, but Bernie's actions and words helped to reinforce it.
This isn't the way that mature delegates act when they're disappointed. They're behaving like spoiled children.
I'll be so glad when this is over. We'll have made history, and the hangers-on won't have a national stage on which they can disrupt, boo, fling-poo, and expose their rear-ends to the world.
