2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMy mom, who has not voted since 1992, asked me if I was registered to vote.
And said she was registering to vote tomorrow. For Hillary Clinton.
You have to understand how amazing this is to me. This is a woman who loathes liberals, is a die hard conservative, anti-choice, anti-gay (even with a gay son), anti-Muslims, whole nine yards.
"Are you registered to vote?"
"Um... yeah. I voted for Obama. Twice."
"I'm getting registered tomorrow to vote for Hillary! She really knocked it out of the ballpark!"
JAW TO THE FLOOR.

(62,270 posts)...for writing very disparaging remarks about Michelle Obama. This is utterly shocking to me.

(30,247 posts)I hope that there are a lot more like your mother. I have never been as scared of a candidate as I am of Trump. He would be disastrous for the country.

(22,669 posts)People aligning for their best interests, instead of against. Imagine how many millions of people that represents. WOW!
It could mean the beginning of the withdrawal for Fox Entertainment and RW talking heads. Without an audience to eat up what they're dishing out, advertisers will move on. And best of all, our country can finally move forward.
Just need to sweep the republicans out of congress too. Her agenda will suffer without a crushing republican defeat...something I'll be working very hard to insure.

(62,270 posts)People are finally seeing that Clinton is another human being, not some evil caricature that the media has portrayed her as for decades.

(62,270 posts)But I was able to convince her that it was no big deal and they needed it for verification purposes.
My mind is so blown that I really can't comprehend this. This is a woman who hates the voting process. I only hope I can get her to vote down ticket dem, but even if she doesn't, and only votes for Clinton, it's a major win.
*only wanted her last four digits of the SSN.

(58,785 posts)you describe any more, knowing they won't/can't change. Well, there are a good many around here, and maybe I should dip my toes in. Congratulations to you and your mom for the removal, or shrinking, of an unfortunate barrier. That's nice.

(33,327 posts)Voting, as Scott Adams is reminding us on his Blog that predicts Trump will win, is largely an irrational process.

(58,724 posts)I just am trying to understand how this makes sense from this person's perspective.

(33,327 posts)Right-wing "thinking" is baffling.
My father still insists (to my sister, 2 weeks ago) that Obama is a Muslim. I cannot fathom it.

(33,327 posts)He doesn't vote (or that's what he says), he says he endorses Clinton this time ("for his personal safety", because he lives in LA), he thinks Trump will win.
I think he puts too much stock in his "Persuasion Techniques". Trump uses them as part of his selling, but the sale (the General) is too drawn-out for the marks not to get wise to the con.
Well, that's what I'm telling myself this weekend...

(30,481 posts)At making conservatives look deep within themselves. Trump is speaking truthfully about what their party has been promoting for a long time. Our convention was a gut check for them. Not all of them of course. Additionally, in this instance, gay marriage has not destroyed the fabric of society. My heart goes out to the op and this parent might have some end of life reconciling to do. There is no way to know the true underlying dynamics at play here. This might be a step toward repentance and acceptance. That would be wonderful and might manifest itself in a strange way.

(62,270 posts)She's also said glowing things about Kahn since (and of course he's getting great support).
Hopefully this will cause her to reevaluate some of her other positions as well.

(108,977 posts)The emotion built all day long, up to the impassioned speeches of Mr. Kahn and General Allen -- and then, at the end, there was sweet Chelsea introducing her beloved mother. And there was Hillary, a calm, strong, capable, and soothing mother, daughter, grandmother.
I bet that's what josh's mother responded to.

(108,977 posts)The Kahn's and all the other "regular" people in the convention helped make gays, Muslims, and other liberals real to the viewers.
And die-hard conservatives have no reason to like Trump. Kasich and others despise him. So Trump has softened some of them up to take another look at Hillary.

(58,724 posts)The key, as far as I am concerned, is getting out the vote. Big turnout - especially from African-American and Latino voters.

of course, all those WWCM have moms, wives, daughters...

(58,724 posts)I will say that I had a conversation with a white male who is in the category of people who dislike both Hillary and Trump, and he was turned off by it a little bit. But we might not actually need those voters if we get enough of a turnout with the demographics in which we are strongest.

(61,694 posts)Her DL with her new address. She has never voted before. She was always afraid she'd be called for jury duty. Now you can be called whether you are registered to vote or not, and she's exempted.
Funny story, she thinks she voted in 2004. She had registered then, and wanted to vote for w. After registering, she received a big colorful flyer from the RNC with a push poll survey on various issues and then a portion of the ballot. She told me it was a mail-in ballot and Barbara Bush had a short letter in it. After she marked it, her husband said he'd put it in the mail. I tried to explain to her that it wasn't a ballot, but she insisted it was. Oh well, at least that was one less vote for Dumbya.
Good on your mom! Make sure she casts a real ballot!

(3,284 posts)My cousin has never voted either. He's always been of the opinion that his vote "doesn't really count", even though we've tried to argue with him. After talking to my mom yesterday, I found out that he'll be voting in November because he's really worried about Trump being elected.
