Breakthrough! An anarchist Buster friend is now asking questions.....

Just days ago she was pretty pissed at me for pointing out she was posting months old articles -about Sanders still having a chance to win the nomination- and exhorting people to "write in" Sanders when I knew that was not actually an option.

She was angry and fustrated at me, I was worried she was going to be ruining a birthday party Thursday night with that shit. Our friend- the birthday celebrant, was also a Hillary supporter.

Well I left the party 20 minutes before it ended to go watch her accept the nomination. I was shocked when she joined me a half hour later, and was cool with my request not to heckle or anything.

And you know what? On the way home she asked me a ton of questions about the Supreme Court. She thought Obama hasn't nominated anyone, and I explained he had and it's been held up because they were hoping to stall for a republican. And that the court is already a much fairer institution now that Scalia is dead. We talked about how much the court could do to help Sanders and Clinton as well as all Americans.

We hugged it out. Today she posted front pages that had pics of Bill instead of Hillary on them, and said WTF.

Completely unexpected. And awesome.

that someone who claims to be involved politically and supportive of a candidate for ideological reason doesn't follow the news enough to know anything about the current political reality-- like not knowing Obama had nominated Judge Garland and the senate was refusing to hold confirmation hearings, lol whut? What kind of minimally informed and politically active person wouldn't know that?

Your friend is a low information voter. Pardon me for thinking that is the of many of the recalcitrant far left folks who think GMOs are more important than racial justice or good jobs.

I'm glad you woke this person up, don't get me wrong. But they have the political insight of a Trump voter. As many of us on DU have said, the far left die hards and the far right wackos share a wide swath of ignorant, white privileged, science denying conspiracy-theory-loving nonsense.

Naïveté and privilege usually go hand in hand.

I doubt a single person I know well is unaware of the Garland nomination.

Primary voters are usually well informed. But certainly anyone who feels strongly enough to still need convincing that as a low information poorly informed feels-right-to-me Sanders supporter, they need to get behind the other democrat who actually won to avoid a dystopian fascist nightmare is someone who needs an education before they vote again.

Giving Sanders credit for policies Hillary has pushed for twenty years. Kind of mind blowing. Just because a person like to talk does not mean they know everything. Bad sources were to blame here I think- ones that refuse to give Obama or Clinton any credit at all. Left wing but shirt info - it happens.

explain to her. It is frightening that BS campaign honchos did not take the time to do more explaining instead of complaining. I do believe that given half the change after being armed with knowledge, facts, and information most of Bernie young supporters, including those from BLM would be our staunchest allies in the GE. I admire their energy and persistence but persistence without knowledge is more hurtful than helpful.

More: https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2016/07/30/weekly-address-its-time-fill-vacancy-supreme-court

You can pass the links on to those you know who don't realize these addresses are happening every single week without fail (about 95% given by the President and the other 5% by the VP or FLOTUS or other guest). And the subjects are generally summarizing any progress that the administration has achieved on various agenda items or how it is reacting to current events.

I know here in Philly, when Shrub gave his for 8 years, the local news radio station aired them at 10 am on Saturday mornings, when most folks were up and about. But when the black President got into office and gave his, they are aired at 6 am on Saturday mornings when many people are still asleep. So rather than record and hold them for a more prime time slot like they did with Bush's, they record them when they come over the feed and air them as soon as they can because it apparently offends them or something. Then you have the electorate continue to ask what the President is doing or why doesn't he do these? But he DOES do them yet they make sure it as difficult as possible to know about them and hear them (notably as an alternate for those without internet who can't listen to them on the web).

This is by design to illustrate the systemic racism inherent in the media.

Yeah - the news radio station here plays the audio on Saturday mornings. Usually audio feeds like this are transmitted at 6 am over a feed and stations that subscribe will record them and air them however their schedule dictates. In the past, the radio station here played the weekly Presidential addresses later in the morning after recording them. But not with this President. But I make it a point to try to listen to it every single week and usually post in Cal04's weekly LBN thread with the embedded video and link to the address.

And have been slowly updating the sig. I thought that was a riot.

Which of course is the #1 Arbitron radio station here.

You know the long history of that station (Westinghouse -> Infinity (NBC affiliate) -> CBS (and affiliate)). And I remember early on when they first started broadcasting them for Obama in 2009, I had to stumble around to find when they aired because Shrub's had been done in the 10 am hour and then they stopped airing the address at that time. And for a number of years, they would "miss" an airing for Obama or would run commercials through the slot when they normally would put it on - again during that 6 am hour (they generally schedule it to come on at ~6:09 am).

In fact, just found this -

Sumner Redstone’s Busy October: 3 Cases in 3 Courts in 3 States

By EMILY STEEL JULY 29, 2016

Lawyers in the bitter fight over Sumner M. Redstone’s $40 billion media empire could be awfully busy come October.

A Delaware judge ruled on Friday that the lawsuit over the move to replace five Viacom directors would go to trial, setting Oct. 17 as a tentative start date. The judge also instructed lawyers for the two sides to discuss the possibility of conducting an independent medical examination of Mr. Redstone, who is 93 and in poor health. His National Amusements holding controls about 80 percent of the voting shares in Viacom and CBS.

A day earlier, a Massachusetts judge scheduled an October trial for a separate lawsuit over Mr. Redstone’s mental competence to make business decisions. And in California, a Los Angeles judge has set a tentative hearing on Oct. 18 for yet another legal fight over the future of Mr. Redstone’s business estate.

<...>

A compromise would allow for a less contentious exit for Philippe P. Dauman as Viacom’s chief executive and enable the company to move forward. Viacom shares have dropped about 20 percent in the last year and the company has been operating in limbo since the controversy erupted in May.

Thank you for helping to educate a voter who obviously needed it.

Low-information voters, and those who vote because their gut tells them it feels good - they'll be the ruin of us yet.

I'm just worried that if Donald Trump somehow wins, we will see here the same phenomenon as the Brits saw, the morning after the Brexit vote. A large national "Oh Wait!!! Uh, wait a minute - uh, we didn't understand - uh, we didn't really think it'd happen - uh, can we have a do-over?"

And you don't get do-overs in elections like that. Or like ours.

You know, this is one of the things that I appreciate about the Bernie Sanders campaign. He brought a lot of people into the system that may not have known a whole lot about the actual process, for whatever reason. That is always a good thing...and their enthusiasm and commitment cannot be denied. You have to be patient sometimes, with people who have not been all that interested in politics, or are just new to the process. It is a wise move to tap this source of new, enthusiastic voters, and we saw that reflected this week onstage at the DNC.

I don't know exactly how to express this, but another thing that helps is to, sort of, lead them toward certain issues, like say, voter suppression tactics. Then let them go and do that research on their own. They will come back at you with facts, figures, articles to read, etc. Then share interesting things that you have seen. I have found that people really do like to be informed, but they maybe don't know exactly how to achieve that. They have lived with Fox news for so long, that they are just used to information being fed to them.

This actually worked on my husband, a Kansas Eisenhower Republican. The best was when he started asking me if I had seen certain articles or whatever. Sometimes I would just say no, and let him show it to me, even if I had already seen it. He has now proud to have voted for President Obama twice, and will soon cast his vote for Hillary Clinton. And I am proud of him.

But "ONLY for the presidency" and "ONLY this one time".

I wore them down with (cliff notes version):
Them: "Hillary is a liar"
Me: "Donald is a bigger one, and worse". - supported by evidence.

Them: "Hillary is a traitor"
Me: "Donald just invited Russia to hack government emails".

Them: "Emailgate"
Me: "Hillary may have broken rules with the server she used, but show me where she invited a foreign goverment to hack them".

Them: "but.. Morals and family values"
Me: "Hillary has never been divorced, donald has 3x. Hillary isn't married to a mail order husband who was born on foreign soild, and would make the spouse only the 2nd first lady in history that isn't a natural born US citizen, not to mention I don't believe I've ever seen Bill Clinton in Pornography. I also don't believe that Hillary and Bill own any strip clubs."

It's been ongoing in facebook, phone calls, and emails for months now. This last round with Trump being endorsed with Putin and them seeing just how close Trump is with Putin was their final straw. Of course it helps that they started out as a Kasich supporter, and never really wanted the donald in the first place.

They are all also quite active in social circles, this has the potential to grow into larger numbers. Here's to hoping!
