Why Trump Supporters Think He'll Win

If you're wondering, like me, why the polls are quite close, I think this article really gives a good sense of what's going on. And I think it's important that Hillary supporters really give this some thought, because in some ways it not only explains why so many people back Trump, it indirectly provides a little insight into some Sanders supporters too.

http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2016/07/backing-donald-trump/493619/

Perhaps the hardest thing to do in contemporary American politics is to imagine how the world looks from the other side. I’ve made no secret of why, as a Republican, I oppose Donald Trump and what he stands for. But I’ve also been talking to his supporters and advisors, trying to understand how they see and hear the same things that I do, and draw such very different conclusions. What follows isn’t a transcription—it’s a synthesis of the conversations I’ve had, and the insights I’ve gleaned, presented in the voice of an imagined Trump supporter.

“You people in the Acela corridor aren’t getting it. Again. You think Donald Trump is screwing up because he keeps saying things that you find offensive or off-the-wall. But he’s not talking to you. You’re not his audience, you never were, and you never will be. He’s playing this game in a different way from anybody you’ve ever seen. And he’s winning too, in a different way from anybody you’ve ever seen."

Of course those evil motherfuckers think Trump will win. They are evil racists and he is spouting evil racism.

America is better than that shit and will prove it November 8.

Trump and his handlers know they will never get my vote .... they know I will be horrified by much (if not all of what he says) .

Sadly, there are those that cheer tRump on as he attacks a grieving family .... BECAUSE they are Muslim. There are those that cheer on racist remarks BECAUSE they agree with the racism and resent the fact that they are shamed for their overtly racist beliefs. They are not disgusted by taunts of the disabled and disabilities .... that is how they feel.

His hatred of women echoes their own.

The only thing that shocks me are the numbers of people that support this. i new they were there and I new their numbers were significant ... i just didn't now they were this significant.

He is the author of the "axis of evil" speech. The worst foreign policy speech of the last 50 years.

14. Frum makes logical arguments

Most republicans are misinformed, dishonest and illogical. David Frum is none of those. Like all humans we Democrats sometimes make errors. At least I do. And it is important to listen to reasonable people who believe we are wrong. For instance George H W Bush EPA head made good arguments for a carbon tax instead of blanket bans. He changed my mind. He changed the minds of most democratic leaders too. I was wrong and I learned by listening to the enemy. This is a good thing.

6. Until the Brexit vote...I never thought Trump stood a chance....

...but I'm here to tell you that if such a nationalistic, racist vote can happen in the UK it can happen anywhere. The lesson learned from Brexit is get out the vote! Don't become complacent. Help register voters. Help educate voters. Volunteer for candidates up and down the ticket. Don't let people swarm social media with unanswered lies. Be reasonable and refute the lies with facts and educate as politely as possible on social media as well in every day life. Study the hateful Republican platform....show people what they are voting for when they want to vote for Trump. Trump voters are uninformed and angry....primarily because they have bought the lies and smears of the right. It's time for all of us to stand up and speak up. Educate the ignorant and uninformed.

16. I can not emphasize the need to call bullshit

on these kinds of memes trying to pretty up pig shit.

This whole "you don't understand" thing is a way of romanticizing stupid.

I understand fully.

There are racist, bigoted and just flat out stupid people in this country.

A LOT OF THEM.

They have been there forever, they have, not exclusively, but predominantly, been a big chunk of republican voters my entire life.

The dolts who have had conservative bullshiters making out to half victim/half saintly true patriots.

So, they are now stupid on steroids. All full of themselves and self righteous.

And, this whole "you don't understand" comes with its mirror "intellectuals" meme that negatively casts being thoughtful, rationale and making decisions based on facts and decency.

This needs to be rejected.

We need to embrace and push back against the negative framing about making reality based decisions on our vote.

AND, we need to accept that there is always going to be a BIG chunk of the electorate that is full on stupid and will VIRULENTLY and with great energy and passion vote against its own best interests.

19. Trump's rise is, more than anything else, the result of Obama being elected POTUS.

That and Republican rhetoric ("welfare queens" and whatnot) of the last 40 years. The Republican Party brought this on themselves. Trump will lose in November. If he loses badly, perhaps some wind will be taken out of the sails of the racists, xenophobes and misogynists.

People can talk about trade policy (http://www.epi.org/publication/why-negotiating-great-trade-deals-is-not-the-answer/) and anti-establishment sentiment as reasons for Trump's nomination, but his support reflects the reality that “The gravitational center of the Republican Party is white nationalism."
