HOW Obama won -- two really good articles (with summary)
Two really good articles below.
Summary:
Technology the first article
- Fundraising
After 2008 the Obama campaign continued did rest on their laurels of having a technological advantange they evaluated how to make it better and how to use it better. They combined their databases into one so they had all their information in one place. The first goal was fundraising and they toyed around with emails from Michelle, Joe, Jim Messina, etc. to see which worked best. They had office pools on which created the most donations. If they could get people to donate right after an election they could certainly get them to volunteer and GOTV come election time.
-Turnout
They ran the election 66,000 times a night (sound like Nate Silver?) to determine where to allocate resources included where to advertise ("Sons of Anarchy" - "Don't Mess with the B in Apt 23" etc.) and more
The Big Bet the second article
The Bain ads - Romney was still in his primary money and couldn't use his general election money yet so they used their data of specific demographics in specific swing states to attack Romney. Bill Clinton advised them that going with the flip-flopper attacks could turn around on them so they went with "Out of touch conservative". They hit around the Great Lakes states and created a buffer that even the first debate could absord.
