2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAre your Republican friends considering write-in candidates?
I just came across a facebook post of a Republican friend of mine where she was asking for people's ideas for write-in candidates. She got a few likes from other Republican friends on it. They seem to be considering writing in Gary Johnson. I believe his name won't appear on the ballot in our state... not enough registered libertarians. This friend is an evangelical Christian. I think she considers Trump to be unsavory, morally bankrupt... so she is looking for alternatives. Not sure that Gary Johnson would satisfy her though. I would think he stance would be to keep abortion legal being a Libertarian. I'm not going to say anything to her about that though. I believe Trump might be the only one that says he is against abortion. I think she can tell he is liar and not genuine about that though.

(26,060 posts)I have very few republican friends and those that are represent what used to be called Rockefeller republicans. They think comrade donnie is an imbecile.

(6,496 posts)I think it is mostly that they think the president should be a man. I've heard this from them before... this is coming from women. I remember talking about this the first time Hillary ran. I was shocked when they told me that they believe that anyone of their own gender is not suitable for president. I have never talked to them about Hillary since then. Makes me sad that some women are against women though.

(26,060 posts)I honestly don't know even one person who is not voting for her because she's a woman - in fact most of the men are saying they've screwed things up enough - it's time to see what a woman can do.

(6,496 posts)and what they are willing to admit to you. I've know these people for a long time, so they are comfortable with being honest (in a nice way) with me. I tell them when I don't agree and they know were I stand. We've been good friends for a long time even though we are so different politically. It comes down the the religion that they grew up with... it colors the way they see the world. I wish I could change that about them. I can't though. They have to decide that they want to change themselves. I can show them that liberals are not awful, terrible people (as portrayed by conservative media) by remaining friends with them. I still like them too and it is good for me to maintain the relationship as a reminder to myself that conservatives are not all bad people too.

(26,060 posts)trashing your friends, I'm truly sorry about that - it wasn't my intention at all. I know living close to and working right in Manhattan gives me a distorted look at the way many Americans experience their life. Would you be surprised to know I don't know even 1 - not even 1 - person that self identifies as evangelical?

(6,496 posts)I probably wouldn't be friends with them if I had met them as adults, but I grew up with these people and have known my whole life so they are like family. I just can't let go of them so easily.
I grew up in a small town that was majority republican families. My family was the weird democrat family. I had the kooky dad who had a huge Bill Clinton side put up on his property when practically everyone else's parents were supporting George Bush. Kids didn't care about that stuff back then (just the adults), so it wasn't hard to have friends.

(42,594 posts)unless someone has filed (and paid money) to be a write-in candidate. Maybe if your county still does paper ballots you could whip out a pen and write a name on your ballot, but it wouldn't show up in the final tally. On the voting machines we use in my county, there's simply no way to enter another name unless someone has filed. Then a write-in option shows up on the touch screen, you press that, and a touch screen keyboard pops up for you to enter a name.

(6,496 posts)I'm not certain how the ballots will be configured this election season, but I recall write in being an option in last few elections.

(3,660 posts)By all means encourage votes for them. They have even less chance of attaining major party status than the Greens but will give fundies that equivalent all-important frisson of smug moral high ground as they siphon a wasted vote away from the feasible (just) candidate on their side of the aisle.

(6,496 posts)I looked it up. Darrell Castle is the Constitution Party candidate. Not someone I'd actually want as president... like you said not likely to happen and it would make them feel better to have an alternative.

(85 posts)who can't stomach Drumf are mostly going for Johnson. It all boils down for either a hatred of Hillary or the abortion/gun/tax issue most Republicans only care about. Little do they know Johnson could potentially be just as bad as Drumf when it comes down to picking Supreme Court justices that can greatly impact a woman's right over her own body, the environment, and more allocation of the wealth to the top. Johnson seems harmless on the outside ("hey man I just want to let you toke the endo smoke, cuz I do brah.." but his economic policies are Republican on steroids and I don't trust libertarians to do the right thing on issues like abortion, civil liberties, etc. etc.
Hopefully Johnson just siphons already Republican votes. Jill Stein and the Mountain Party need to stay the fuck out of this election and not screw it up ala Nadar.

(3,263 posts)But our republican senator soon to be replaced by Tammy Duckworth (D) claims he is going to write in Colin Powell to protest Trumps bigotry.
He's probably just saying that because this is Illinois and he is desperate for votes
Edit to add if I did have republican friends I would encourage them to write in most definitely

(42,287 posts)Both Libertarian and Green parties are on the Ohio ballot.
What can I say? They swallowed the lies and hate Hillary, but are smart enough to never vote Drumpf.
