35. Why any candidate would ever hire Ed Gillespie again is beyond me.

Right up to the time the initial returns were coming in Tuesday night he was still confidently predicting victory. By that time he had to have seen the exit polls released at 5 pm and known that Romney was in trouble in every last one of the swing states, including NC, which remained too close to call well into the night before finally becoming the only swing state to land in the Romney column. That and simply refusing to believe the majority of polls and statistical models showing Obama likely to win significantly more than 270 EVs in favor of wishful thinking partisan polls and pundits - he also had to have internal polls showing that Romney was likely going to lose. At that point at the least one should be preparing the candidate and the supporters for the possibility of a loss - this could have avoided the very messy situation later in the night with the delayed concession call which frankly will be remembered as a less than classy move on Romney's part, even though they are now trying to rewrite history and suggest that Romney made a gutsy call to concede instead of dragging out the process with challenges in Ohio, Virginia, and Florida. But that is BS because by that time they all knew that the numbers were clearly against them. To his credit when Romney finally did make his concession speech it was gracious but it was at least 2 hours late. The call for Obama by the networks came at 10:13 pm EST. Romney's concession speech came around 1 am EST. The only person questioning the Ohio call was Karl Rove and it was him against all of the networks. I also don't accept the notion that Romney had to write his concession speech. Okay did that mean he couldn't make a call to Obama. And he had enough indicators earlier in the evening to know he had better have a concession speech ready. Most of his concession speech was clearly a minor rewrite of the acceptance speech anyway - keep the thank yous, remove the looking to the future talk, and add a small section on working with the winner. That should have taken all of five minutes.

I'll admit that their confidence had me wondering if they knew something we didn't, or if the fix was simply in. When Ohio was called, I saw the number of votes outstanding and thought they could make it up....but in the end, Political Scientists like Nate Silver and pollsters like PPP were right -- again. Rasmussen was wrong; FAUX was wrong; Dick Morris was wrong. Conservatives have become so obsessed with the notion of a "liberal media" that they now live strictly in the FAUX News universe. That universe is increasingly separated from reality.

You mentioned, "watching old White guys use code words and say horrible, vile things for four years." I'm not saying race is not part of the equation with their treatment of Obama (it certainly is), but I'll remind you that from day 1 in 1993, they said vile, hateful things about the Clintons. They led a multi-million dollar fishing expedition to find evidence that the Clintons had been involved in financial malfeasance with regard to Whitewater, and found nothing more than the fact that Bill Clinton had a mistress and lied about it. Conservatives continually spewed crazy conspiracy theories about the Clintons-- they had Vince Foster whacked; they were smuggling billions of dollars worth of drugs into the US; they were going to lead the charge to one world government.

Obama, Plouffe & Axelrod mastered the two key elements. One was raising lots of money in small increments (the lesson learned from Howard Dean in 2004). The second was mobilizing. Romney supporters were enthusiastic, and put up a helluva lot of yard signs, but ultimately underestimated support for Obama. I think they also vastly underestimated the degree to which they've alienated the Latino community, and the degree to which they decided to express their displeasure at the polls.

21. The AA vote in Ohio in all likelihood was greater than 15%. Remember

Karl Rove imploding on FOX News late Tuesday night? HIs lying ass could not believe that after shaving off three or five percent of the black vote in predominantly black precincts, Romney still got beat. Shaving off five percent could be done without causing great alarm. The disconnect likely occurred because he assumed that the AA vote would be 10-11 percent and not 15 or 18 percent. The "genius" had been outwitted. Likely the same situation in Florida. They used a 2008 model to shave points off of a 2012 year and came up short. Thus Karl became unhinged as he began to realize that he something terribly wrong had occurred and that his plan to steal Ohio had backfired. My thoughts only.

This may go down as one of the greatest political miscalculations by a political party in the U.S since 1948. At least in 1948 the Republicans had some cover with nearly all of the media calling it for Dewey. But this year the state polling was showing that a fairly comfortable Obama win was possible, maybe even likely. But the Republicans simply refused to believe the arithmetic. For all of the Republican talk about Obama hubris regarding his reelection, it was Obama who prepared both a victory and a concession speech and it was Romney who wrote only a victory speech. Now that is hubris.

It is a cliche but very true that the Republicans have fallen into the trap of believing their own press releases. They have created an alternative reality based on wishful thinking about how things SHOULD BE rather than how things ACTUALLY ARE. This is a fundamental flaw in Republican thinking and it is more than just about elections. It carries over to issues like climate change, gay marriage, health care, taxes. economic growth, immigration and how science works. They simply do not believe anything which their gut tells them is not so and they will not change their beliefs even in the face of overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary.

Republicans would be well served to hire non-Republicans to read their press releases. "Somehow they got ‘em to vote” is a perfect example of a statement that probably should have been put another way. In the context that the speaker was , IIRC, talking about AA voters in Ohio, the statement sounds like the speaker is saying "Well, they are a bunch of ignorant, unmotivated layabouts, but somehow they got 'em to vote." Instead, they could have tried a statement like "We underestimated their level of organizing in the AA community" or "Because of the economy, we underestimated the AA turnout."

Why I'd expect this from a party that regularly and frequently refers to Latinos as "illegals" and suggests they should all be deported is another question.
