Second: In the melting pot that is America, inclusive trumps exclusive. Whether its single women, young adults or minorities, alienating the most rapidly growing voting blocs is just not smart politics specifically, Latinos, who voted by a margin of almost three to one for the president. To survive, the GOP needs to invite people in, not shut them out.
Third: Pandering on everything doesnt work at the end of the day. At some level, constancy of views matters when running for the presidency. You cant be a theological right-winger on issues of contraception and womens health and then suddenly pretend to be moderate without sacrificing your credibility. On every issue that mattered, the Etch-A-Sketch approach was a debilitating factor that was corrosive to the core function of a president: strength and leadership.
Fourth: We really did build this, all of us, together. At a deeper level, this election was about our notion of community, especially in times of need. And the public appears to appreciate the role that government plays at those times. And that is why Hurricane Sandy was such a vital metaphor. It was the real-life reminder that crises whether the cataclysm of 2008 or a natural disaster require a common effort in response.

Fifth: The Republican House has to figure out whether to continue to play obstructionist naysayer or come to the table. Is Grover Norquist still the head of the Republican Party? Or will John Boehner acknowledge the better angels of his nature and negotiate a meaningful comprise with the president? That, and the willingness of the Senate to pass filibuster reform, are the two biggest outstanding questions which will determine the course of the next several months.

(18,541 posts)1. Yeah, give 'em a guide on how to lie next time around.
How could that possibly hurt us?

(36,649 posts)2. It won't, because they'll ignore this sage wisdom.
More so, because it's really simple common sense. It's not like the GOP doesn't know any of this, they just believe it doesn't apply to them. They've got the old white male vote locked up - that's what has always worked for them before, why should they change?
We'll have to wait 15-20 yrs for the Old Guard of the GOP to die off before they begin to seriously address issues that matter to different demographic groups.
