Is it too late for the Republicans to replace Donald Trump? (Original Post) demgrrrll Aug 2016 OP
They can't replace him unless he resigns. So unless they can figure out a way to force pnwmom Aug 2016 #1
Yes. The RNC has no mechanism to force him out. The Velveteen Ocelot Aug 2016 #2

They'd have to persuade him to quit, and I very much doubt that he can be persuaded.

I'd hate to see them dump him now and put up a candidate that might appear almost reasonable in his place. I like the way the electoral maps are looking these days.

still possible to replace him, but the window of opportunity is closing fast. And even then it would be very, very messy and turn into an even bigger circus than what you see now.

They say that a nominee can be replaced in the event of, "death, declination or otherwise." So the question is "What constitutes 'otherwise'?"

Some states' deadlines for getting on the ballot have already passed. Others are final next Tuesday or Friday. Even more the end of August/beginning of September.

I'd just like him to stay in a few more weeks just to make sure they are totally stuck with him, because even if a new candidate won't have time to launch much of a campaign, it is great for down-ballot races.

Legally, can they replace him? Rule 9 looks like they can.

Can they replace him without totally destroying the Republican Party? No. His tea party fans would bolt straight for the Libertarians, never to be seen again. Meanwhile, defections to the Democratic Party would continue precisely because the R's are falling apart.

I think the Republican PTB have given up on the presidential race and are trying to make a stand downticket. That should work about as well for them as it did for Custer.
