2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumthe assassination order/wink -- "walking it back" is part of the wink.
trump can't "walk it back" in any meaningful sense. oh sure, he said "that would be horrible" immediately after, and in theory he could today apologize profusely (as if he's capable of that) say he's adamantly opposed to violence, doesn't want anyone to act on his poorly chosen words, etc.
the problem is, none of that actually undoes the request because distancing himself from the order is part of the whole thing. further distancing himself from the assassination request doesn't undo the assassination request; all it does is distance himself from it so that if it were to actually happen, he can say he made it clear he didn't want it to happen, yadda, yaddda, yadda.
how many hollywood scripts have we seen where the mob boss or someone makes a similar request, pining for a "problem" to "disappear", and then saying something like, "but ii wouldn't want anyone to do anything illegal"? some movies even make a joke of it, when the hitman says, "got it boss, wink, wink", then the boss tries to say, "no, i really didn't mean that", and the hitman keeps saying, "right, of course not, got it, boss, we never had this conversation, wink, wink"?
sometimes you can't get the toothpaste back into the tube. once again, trump has demonstrated that his entire political knowledge is based on being a foxnews viewer. it's bad enough when pundits and commentators talk idly about "second amendment solutions", but it's completely out of line when interviewing to be leader of the free world.

(52,243 posts)hollywood gets away with it because it's fiction (or a retelling of a story that already happened).
foxnews gets away with it because they're entertainment idiots and they have free speech rights and they're just tv people, they're not in positions where society demands them to be tremendously responsible.
trump is running for a job that requires more responsibility than anyone perhaps.
personally, i wouldn't make him responsible for fries, never mind the entire country.

(4,516 posts)trying to tell all us we didn't hear what we heard. Poor, poor Trump. He is SOOO misunderstood! His bimbo squad was out there hitting every news cast and political show last night but then Trump couldn't help himself and made this statement on Hannity:
"I have to say, in terms of politics, there is few things, and I happen to think that if [the media] did even bring this up, I think its good for me. Because its going to tell people more about me with respect to the Second Amendment
because Hillary Clinton wants to essentially abolish the Second Amendment."
