2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe polls just reflect the GOP who are embarrassed to say they will
vote for Trump, but.....
on Nov 8 they will be looking over their shoulder and voting for Trump.

(11,605 posts)That is what I understand happened in 1980 - Reagan outperformed the polls because some people were embarrassed to say they were voting for him.
If Hillary is leading going into election day but most of the undecideds are Republicans, I expect she will not do as well as polls suggest.

(11,949 posts)At the time. Folks here love to compare Trump to Reagan but that is as crazy as what Trump is saying.
Reagan was a very popular ex-governor of the largest state in America, which could be counted on to vote republican at the time. And did. He had almost stripped the nomination from a sitting president in 1976.
Do not go by what you 'hear' or 'understand' about history anywhere, especially on a partisan site. Do your own research. It was no surprise when Reagan won. Crushing to democrats as it was a landslide. He won over 45 states if I remember correctly.
This is just another 'concern' thread. As Hillary gets further ahead I look forward to reading the reasons she is really going to lose.

(13,776 posts)Who's going to own up to supporting such a nasty, narcissistic, dishonest self-promoter? He is vile. It's what his more visible supporters like about him, but there are some people who still have enough shame to recognize that supporting him is unacceptable in polite society. Yet they can't bring themselves to vote for a Democrat.
So I do agree that, even though a lot of his supporters are loud and proud about it, there are some people who are too embarrassed to admit that they'll vote for him. If Gary Johnson weren't in the race, I'd worry about it a lot more. I think it'll be okay.

PS your theory was disproven in the primary, where the polls were accurate in predicting Trump's win. It's just that the prognosticators didn't want to believe the polls.

(108,978 posts)that Trump would win. Those voters weren't too embarrassed to say who they supported.
Trump supporters are too dumb to realize they should be embarrassed.

It is just as likely that some Rethugs would be too embarrassed to admit they're voting for the girl.
