Will Mitch McConnell keep his job as Leader of the Obstruction?

He wasn't able to make The Big O a one-term prez...and he couldn't flip the Senate.

I'm thinking they might turf him and switch to somebody else...what's your take?

1. I would think he's going to be challenged by someone.

And the rethugs should be looking at their ranks and assessing who could best represent them for the next couple of years at minimum. The chinless wonder has been too prominent and too painted by his stated goal of making Obama a one term president. That plan backfired right in his face and his colleagues should be having some serious discussion with him about making way for someone else. If he doesn't, they should look at pushing him out of the way because his brand of conservative Repulicanism was just rendered as dead as the Dodo.

Thing is, though, there are very few more moderate rethug senators among their ranks. Some of the people that retired to make it possible for the Dems to actually pick up addditional seats were just about the last remaining moderates - if not the THE last ones.

2. They got rid of Lugar, and the only sane one left (maybe) is the female senator from Maine, so...

Didn't she state she's leaving when her term expires?

Thing is, though, they're going to have to change their tactics. This scorched earth approach to governing has just been shelacked by the voters. A a very minimum, they've got to make people at least think they're able to compromise. McConnell just doesn't strike me as someone that could credibly pull off looking as if he could do that after all his smug pronouncements and posturing for the past four years.

She has no chance of becoming Senate Minority Leader.

She's a moderate from Maine just like Olympia Snowe and that makes her a non-starter with the Republican base.

She could sit as an independent, like the new Maine senator, Angus King is going to do. Under those circumstances, she'd probably have no problem caucusing with the Dems as an I.

Really, why should she stay in the GOP caucus anymore?

Would they want to step into that kind of role and be painted by the electorate by any perceived failures?

5. Good question. But Republicans tolerate losers more than Democrats do.

Particularly Republican senators. Remember how they acted when Todd Akin would not get out of the race in Missouri after his infamous "legitimate rape" remarks? "Well, ok then, it was just a suggestion."

I'm not being critical, really. And to be fair, I think this party had been brainwashed that this Tea Party movement was a widespread and growing success with the populace (even though this group is just a "rebranding", if you will of the the existent rightwing, religious, racists zealots they've had since the days following Johnson's Great Society reshaped America). If they can't see now that this is not how the emerging population of voters in the US is thinking, they won't have any hope for some time to come.
