2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAnderson Copper earlier had a segment on with a focus group of 8 Latinos
Seven were Cuban and 1 was from the Dominican Republic. It always amazes me how Cubans seem to have little empathy for Latinos of Mexican descent, when there but by the grace of God goes them. Cubans have been getting a free pass if they make it to the water's edge in the US, they can stay. This has been the policy for decades now, and it's not like they have done anything to deserve it moreso than those of Mexican descent. Now that the US has re-established diplomatic relations with Cuba, I hope that will end the free pass to US status that Cubans enjoy, since most seem to vote Republican anyway.
Also, this morning, one of the Trump mothers who had lost a son was on an MSNBC show this morning. The Hosts name was Brook Rule, I think. (don't know for certain and they never showed her name) There was a legalized Mexican woman and a woman who was born here many years ago. (a Dreamer) The legalized woman had lost a son to someone who was in this country illegally, and she was pretty nasty to the girl who was the dreamer. The woman who was legalized told the girl who was the dreamer that she should have to go back to her country and get it line. She stated that she was NOW legalized, though she wasn't when she came here, but she never said how she became legal. My guess is that she married someone while in the US which made her legal. (I remembered her from last night, she was one of the mothers on with Trump) The Dreamer had to be at least in her mid 20s and she had 2 sisters, all of whom were born here. Having lived in Southern California my entire life and having grown up with, gone to Catholic school with, and have known in the workplace many, Hispanics, I was shocked at how racists some of them can be towards one another who are not here legally. If you come into this country illegally, and then marry someone, does that really make you better than someone who is not here legally in your small mind? If you arrive on a boat from Cuba and are immediately eligible for US citizenship and live next door to someone here from Mexico illegally, does that make you better than they are?

(3,335 posts)I believe that they were all Republicans though, although I think one stated that she would likely be voting for Hillary. I recorded it so I'll go back and take another look at it and see if he says why he didn't include anyone who was Mexican. I don't recall him addressing it earlier though. If I find any additional information, I'll update this post.

(38 posts)African Americans were born here, are fully assimilated into the white EU culture as it was forced on them through slavery. They have more in common with white natural born Americans than any other group in America. Their customs, holidays, celebrations, family mores, and most "values" are the same as those of whites. There is a economic class distinction but they have more in common than any other groups. Blacks are fully assimilated into the American culture and value system from birth. AND IT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE. They are still discriminated against, disliked, as are illegal immigrants and in many cases more so. Blacks have borne the brunt of loss jobs in the service and sanitation industries and mostly lost to immigrants of Hispanic origin. So, lack of "assimilation" is not the problem as Mr. Trump would have us believe. It is still about race and people of color.
It is a complex and difficult situation for people of color because of the forces which work to divide them and cause divisiveness among them...including even Asians. Most distressing is the discrimination against blacks by immigrant groups themselves.
Our hope has to be with the young who are more tolerant and inclusive than their elders.
No matter if Mr. Trump is elected or not. His damage to this country is done and completes the circle of hate that was renewed during the Reagan administration.
