2016 Postmortem

The Republican National Committee had high hopes that Donald J. Trump would deliver a compassionate and measured speech about immigration on Wednesday, and prepared to lavish praise on the candidate on the partys Twitter account.
So when Mr. Trump instead offered a fiery denunciation of migrant criminals and suggested deporting Hillary Clinton, Reince Priebus, the party chairman, signaled that aides should scrap the plan, and the committee made no statement at all.
The evening tore a painful new wound in Mr. Trumps relationship with the Republican National Committee, imperiling his most important remaining political alliance.
Mr. Priebus and his organization have been steadfastly supportive of Mr. Trump, defending him in public and spending millions of dollars to aid him. But the collaboration between Mr. Trumps campaign and Mr. Priebuss committee has grown strained over the last month, according to six senior Republicans with detailed knowledge of both groups, some of whom asked to speak anonymously for fear of exacerbating tensions.

(10,098 posts)And is a wet dream for the hate radio that is on 24/7 and the racist base of the party. I don't get why there would be any conflict. Hugh Hewitt described the speech with many superlatives, including "sophisticated"....snicker.
Oh yeah, and the speech made David Duke's white hood stiffen.

(24,692 posts)The tea party has gone to meet its maker
The tea party is now indistinguishable from the Trump Party. Liberals have had a rollicking good time watching Trump peel the Indian paint off the erstwhile rebels. Brian Beutler of the New Republic routinely responds to racist outbursts among Trump supporters with a mock lament for the "economic anxiety" purportedly driving their allegiance to Trump.
Competing arguments that Trump supporters are motivated by declining economic prospects versus racial resentment are not mutually exclusive. But a deep analysis of Trump supporters released last week by Gallup shows that the economic angle is the more convoluted and uncertain one.
The evidence "is mixed as to how economic hardship affects Trump's popularity," wrote economist Jonathan Rothwell. "Racial isolation and lack of exposure to Hispanic immigrants raise the likelihood of Trump support. Meanwhile, Trump support falls as exposure to trade and immigration increases, which is the opposite of the predicted relationship."
That last part was the bomb. Trump's signature issues are trade and immigration. Yet his supporters appear less exposed to negative effects from trade and immigration than people who don't support him.

(12,448 posts)The so-called "moderate Republicans" have been dog-whistling racism, misogynism, and xenophobia for decades. Trump is different only in that he says it out loud.
Have a nice time with the leader of your party, Republicans.

(58,648 posts)most of them have turned into "centrist" Democrats.
What we see now is the hard right Repub party that is the Tea Party wet dream. Although I think the TPers were racist, they weren't so openly rabid about it until now. Trump has exposed that.
Know him by the company he keeps.
