After all, people with visitor visas and student visas have to leave the country and reapply for their tourist visa or their student visa. At least that's how it worked when I issued visas a gazillion years ago. I'm not sure if H-1B visas work that way. So the leaving to reapply is not such a crazy idea.

And in an ideal world, it might be reasonable for illegal immigrants to leave the country and reapply for legal immigration. After all, many illegal immigrants have American citizen children, so it should be routine. However, there are 11 million or so illegal immigrants, and many (most?) of the American citizen children of these illegal aliens are minors, so deporting their parents is inhumane. And, of course, in a Trump administration, having been an illegal immigrant will undoubtedly be cause to reject an application for legal immigration, regarding of sibling, parent, or child citizenship. And then there's the fundamental fact that you cannot trust a word Trump says, not does that policy take into account the human and economic toll of mass forced deportations.

Godwin's law notwithstanding, this was Hitler's stated policies in the 1920s and 1930s, and he followed those principles to a truly evil end. Could it happen here? Not the mass killings, of course, but with the (apparent) support of half the country, and notwithstanding the Constitution, I certainly can see Trump putting those policy wheels in motion if he is elected.
