By Eugene Robinson Opinion writer September 8 at 7:25 PM
The most revealing moment in the presidential candidates first joint forum Wednesday night came when Donald Trump told the world how much he admires Vladimir Putin .
Never mind that the Russian strongman invaded Ukraine and seized Crimea. Never mind that he supports the butcher Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Never mind that so many of his political opponents end up murdered or imprisoned. Never mind that U.S. officials suspect his government of trying to disrupt our election with cyberattacks. In Trumps star-struck eyes, all of this makes him a leader, far more than our president has been a leader.
Putin, you see, once paid Trump a compliment. If he says great things about me, Trump told moderator Matt Lauer, Im going to say great things about him.
There you have it, folks, the distilled essence of Trumps disgraceful campaign. Its not about immigration or foreign policy or making America great again, whatever that means. Its entirely about Trump and his raging egomania.

Face the truth: Trump has to be the most dangerously ignorant major-party presidential candidate in history.

(17,304 posts)Anyone who criticizes him faces his wrath. Anyone who sings his praises or even said a few nice words about him gets treated in kind. He's such a reactionary simpleton.

(1,907 posts)He is someone I'd really like to meet in real life. Through the years and a lot of the news circus shows he has been the sane one in the group.

(5,995 posts)He was in the same 1970 Presidential Scholars group with Merrick Garland coming out of high school.
Stonepounder
(4,033 posts)is his narcissism. Look at how he runs his companies. He does NOT have good business sense. He makes his money through lies, theft, and cheating. He 'goes with his gut' which as many have already pointed out, is wrong remarkably often.
He'll go with his gut as President (and probably end nearly all life on earth by starting a nuclear holocaust).

(804 posts)A Republican who has been involved in several past Republican campaigns made an interesting statement on Lawrence O'Donnell last night. He said that Trump is what the former Bolsheviks called a "useful idiot". Most sane, intelligent people, regardless of party, will hopefully conclude that this con man is incompetent and temperamentally unfit to be the leader of the Free World.

State the Obvious
(842 posts)Dictators need the help of stupid people who will spread their hateful, catastrophic agendas without question. Putin (dictator) needs Donald Trump (useful idiot) to promote his hatred of the US. Trump supporters would fall into the same category.
