2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs Hillary Baiting The Media With Her "Deplorables" Comment?
Trump says a thousand outrageous things and the media says nothing.
Hillary's TV ads are packed with outrageous things Trump has said over the years, things the media never points out.
So now, Hillary says one thing that the media finds questionable. Ever since Lauer's misogynistic performance, the media has woken up to their own unfair and lopsided coverage. Will the media now feel an obligation to balance Hillary's questionable choice of words by citing Trump's horrible choice of words over the decades?
Team Hillary is smart. Considering the timing and the message, I think there's a bit of three-dimensional chess being played.

(453 posts)To me it doesn't matter. I told my mother about this today. She doesn't care for either candidate doesn't really care about politics. I assumed my mom would say that Hillary shouldn't have said that. Instead my mother said, well... It's true!
I don't have Twitter but if someone does, tweet out the NYtimes video of Trump rallies. #basketofdeplorables

(234 posts)She has said this multiple times over the last several days. And her comment served to focus attention on the hateful and extreme makeup of Trump's supporter base, changing the issue from who's more likable or entertaining (no matter how ridiculous) to can you live with your choice and what s/he represents? It's an important distinction and up until now, the coverage has framed the election as more of a popularity contest in the way Drumpf has been given a pass on the most arrant nonsense and the constant BS about likability.

(14,274 posts)It provides her media attention and her "apology" was such a zinger that it appeared to be scripted to me. Regardless, she made her point and then slammed it home and that is ultimately what matters. I am proud of her for not walking it back.

(13,783 posts)... something she came up with off the cuff. (This said by someone else here in DU.) I'm sure the campaign planned it and expected the kerfluffle. Get a little media attention like Trump does. I even think they predicted the pouncing on "half" and planned to use it to re-state her main point. Go Hillary!
