2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHillary and I are the same age. I'm voting for her but
after this morning, I'm taking a much closer look at Tim Kaine as the individual who would take over if HRC became incapacitated while in office. I'm wondering what other folks my age here are thinking.

(15,951 posts)several presidents have died in office and already think that if anything happened to her that Tim Kaine would be a good president. I also know that if that pig Trump dies in office we will get an equally deplorable president like Pence.

(58,785 posts)did in office. Good grief again? Book_worm may not be able to help being concerned, but for everyone else,
When is the last time that a president died in office after the development of penicillin, much less angioplasty? Assassination excepted, of course.

(7,963 posts)I mean, c'mon. This is the media. This is what they do. They have done this for 30 yrs. Not gonna change now. I think WE have changed, though. And it is becoming less tolerable what they do to her. The rampant sexism is being exposed and it is ugly. It won't hurt her anymore than anything else they have tried in the last bazillion years. Things are changing. And this will soon blow over too like everything else. Turn the tv off. It makes people overreact because that is what it is designed to do.
Why would you feel ashamed for fainting? Or is it sarcasm and I didn't quite get it? Just about everyone walks around with some degree of dehydration. So it's not that big a leap to get into the hot zone. I did too in my 20's from dehydration and heat exhaustion (went tubing all day and then hot, muggy concert at night). Learned my lesson. Never again.
Rex
(65,616 posts)It was sarcasm. For the past year or so I've kept a lid on my anger at people crapping on our candidate. I think that lid is about to pop off. I've made it this far without getting too worked up over the bullshit, but my tank is on full...I've had enough with the frivolous garbage thrown at HRC!!!

(71,036 posts)a fan club is what is needed...the so called constructive (anything but) criticism has no place in a general. Even after the election ..perhaps it is misplaced as well ...I saw many here tear Obama a new one in 09/10 and what did we gain...a Republican Congress...Perhaps a fan club would be more useful in advancing a progressive agenda.

(3,757 posts)But think about this. I am sure in as open of area with as many people as the ceremony she has some pretty heavy duty body armor on. This is probably more uncontrolled area then any stop on the campaign. So to try to understand what she was feeling and how much strength she has. Wait till it is about 80 f outside and humid. Put on a good winter coat closed up all the way. Then walk around for a hour and a half. To me she did really good handling it as long as she did. That is a lot of stress and shows she is in pretty good shape. I doubt if a lot of younger people could handle it as long as she did.
Edit I forgot to add Kevlar doesn't breath like some of the winter coats. So it's probably worse then that.

(4,562 posts)I have a minor in History, and that's enough for me to know the odds of a Vice President becoming President... well, it may not be likely, but it is very possible. That is why Sarah Palin was such an irresponsible choice by John McCain. That is why, as soon as Biden was selected, I went into full-blown research mode.
Did I think John McCain or Barack Obama were likely to die? No. But they could have. Anyone can.
I think Hillary will be fine. That is what I think, but I am not a soothsayer and nobody on this planet truly knows what the future holds.
Right now, my thoughts are that I hope Hillary feels well going forward and has a wonderful day. I've had a fainting spell before (mine was due to low blood sugar) and I know how scary that can be. I think it was very brave of her to walk out of her daughter's apartment in front of the press like that.
I hope Trump remains classy on this one. If not... **** him.

Decades later, I can honestly say I am in better shape, eat more healthy, know the steps to take to avoid heat stress, hypogycemia and other issues, have normal BP (which I didn't in my 30s)--so risk-wise this is actually LESS likely to happen to me now then in my teens.
Age isn't, in and of itself, the only (or in many cases even the most important) predictor of health.

(3,426 posts)This is for the general population. her life expectancy should be much better due to other factors such as high income and being a non smoker. It makes all the difference in the world and it would be great PR to see her jogging around a track with her young assistants.
I"m 72 and can run for an hour++ straight out in 90 degree sunlight. Not that I'm so great but I' have to do it for health reasons - my husband, too, he's 73 and has had a heart attack, a broken back and Crohn's Disease - we run every day no matter what. I wish I could convince every one to do it. Its hard but you feel great afterwards.
HRC looks like the type you need to watch her when you are walking with her and hold her elbow going up and down curbs. I know that type.

Do you call people with disabilities "that type"?
People who have hip, knee or ankle injuries?
Someone young or old who just had the flu and feels a bit weak still?
Someone whose back is aching and could use a helping hand?
That's as compassionless a statement as any I've seen here.

I know the type that likes to be all judgmental about other people because they know nothing about medicine, or the reality of what people actually do in their daily lives, and think that just because they do something, everyon else can, and is weak for not doing so. These types are awfully preachy, but rather ignorantly so, since they literally have no clue what they're talking about or the actual health status of those they lecture to.
Her doctor, the one that went to medical school, did residency, fellowship and who actually examined her patient and knows her health status, and her daily schedule? Her diagnosis and prognosis are not nearly as "interesting" as yours, I guess that's what actually having a clue gets ya, an informed opinion.
Her cardiovascular health is excellent, as are her cholesterol levels, pretty damned good for someone her age. I'm guessing they're far better than yours.
I cannot believe the utter ignorance of that last comment. Truly, there are many here who also seem to choose the deplorable basket whenever they have the chance. And also, that's not Huma's job, it is the secret service's. Please don't be the type that just keeps saying truly offensive and deeply ignorant things due their personal dislike of a person who has accomplished a great deal in life and is in excellent health and has the stamina that most women older than her seem to envy.

I would have prefered that all the candidates had been a bit younger. It's a really tough job.

(15,467 posts)"A guardsman has collapsed during the Trooping the Colour ceremony in London today as the Queen's official 90th birthday celebrations continue.
The man fell to the floor early on during the festivities at Horse Guards Parade and was stretchered away by officials.
It comes just a few weeks after another soldier collapsed during rehearsals for the event in May, while guardsman have collapsed before in recent years including 2013 and 2011.
The reason is usually a combination of the temperature - today a balmy 22C - and the heavy uniform and bearskin hats the soldiers have to wear.
Yesterday an RAF serviceman had to be led away by paramedics after fainting while standing guard outside St Paul's Cathedral.
The incident happened shortly before the Queen - and hundreds of dignitaries, leaders and members of the Royal Family, arrived at the cathedral for a special thanksgiving service.
Those on duty maintained their professionalism and composure, helping the young serviceman - a member of the RAF Regiment - back to his feet before continuing to stand guard while he was led away. "......
----------------------------------------
My point is that this is neither unusual nor ominous. It can and does happen to young people in excellent health as well as to someone of "Clinton's age." She was wise to leave the event and relax for a couple of hours in her daughter's no doubt comfortable and air conditioned apartment, although the optics are unfortunate in the context of recent innuendo and outright lies about her health.

Have you noticed how most holders of public office keep going really well and then some may get sick soon after retirement? No way is her brain turning to rice pudding. I expect it to stay really sharp for the next 8 years and well beyond.
As for physical health, I feel just fine and notice that many, many people are living well into their 90's. 70 isn't what it used to be.

Have done it several more times over the decades, under circumstances that were always easily explained and physiologically logical.
80 degrees could feel quite warm when all buttoned up in a pantsuit, even if you did not have a Kevlar vest on underneath. Blood pooling in the lower extremities from standing too long. Emotional flashbacks to a very agonizing day.

(15,512 posts)Can we cease with the "concern?" Hillary has been campaigning non-stop since she declared her candidacy. Can she not be allowed to have a coughing fit or a spell of lightheadedness without people immediately buying into and disseminating GOPer TPs? Especially on DU?
Sheesh! I am amazed at how healthy Hillary is after working MUCH harder than almost any other single person in the US for the past two years (except perhaps for Prez O) - and with NO vacations whatsoever for the past two years that I've heard of.
How many of US - of whatever age or gender - can say or do the same?
As for considering Tim Kaine seriously, those of us who support the ticket wholeheartedly support him as well - without having to voice GOPer TPs to do so. Being able to serve as President should ALWAYS be a consideration for the Veep nominee - that should go without saying.

As far as VP choices, I think she did well with Tim Kaine. Any VP candidate should be chosen with the thought in mind that he/she might have to step up to the presidency. No one is invincible. That is what made through McCain /Palin ticket so scary.
