What is walking pneumonia?
The type of pneumonia Clinton has is unknown. But walking pneumonia is a very common type of the disease that does not require a hospital stay. People with walking pneumonia, which is often caused by a bacteria called Mycoplasma pneumoniae, often feel well enough to go about their daily activities and work. It may feel like they have a bad cold or a case of the flu. Anyone can contract walking pneumonia, which can be more frequent in the late summer and early fall, and people who work in crowded places are thought to be at a higher risk for getting it.

I've had mycoplasma pneumonia several times, and it can just feel like a persistent cough. I've never had a fever above 99 with it. That's how it came to be termed "walking pneumonia." Many people come to the doctor after walking around with a cough for several weeks, and it turns out to be pneumonia.

(12,631 posts)coughing. Just started to feel sick on Fri. Went home from school. On Mon. principal announced she had died on Sun. Lots of disbelief. Principal said it was "walking pneumonia". That's all I remember from a long time ago (but within the era of effective antibiotics)

Walking pneumonia often feels like a cold, and a cough that persists for weeks. If your friend didn't have a cough, and got so severely sick so quickly, she probably had another form of pneumonia.
