'Boss...I'm feeling crummy today, and the Doc said I need to rest,'

"so, I won't be in for a couple of days. He gave me some antibiotics for this walking pneumonia thing."

"Well, Emily, that could become more serious, so I'm going to have to let you go. We can't take any chances that you might get sicker, you know. I hope you feel better, but we can't keep you on if you got sick. Too bad, really. Good luck with your job search."

Heard nowhere ever in the high-level business world....

Our nominee has a minor case of pneumonia, so she needs a couple of days off.

I cannot tell you the number of times I powered through an illness to meet deadlines and keep the work flowing because it was simply a common occurrence that happened so many times during my career. I would occasionally take a break and work from home, but showing my face was always important.

It's ten times worse for minorities and women in high level positions, too.
