2016 Postmortem

By Bret Stephen (whose laments I have posted here many times)
Q: How can you call yourself a conservative columnist when youre rooting for Hillary Clinton in this election?
A: Because Donald Trump is anti-conservative, un-American, immoral and dangerous... My fundamental objection to Mr. Trump is that he is unfit, as a person, to be president.
Q: Oh, please. Ill grant hes a bit rough around the edges, but thats because hes a nonpolitician. Hes also a brilliant businessman who made billions of dollars.
A: I might believe that claim if he would release his tax returns, or if six of his businesses hadnt gone bankrupt, or if he hadnt been involved in more than 4,000 lawsuits, or if he didnt routinely shortchange his suppliers or stiff his charities.
(snip)
Q: Still, you cant argue with success.
A: What Mr. Trump has achieved isnt success. Its notoriety. He has more in common with Kanye West than he does with Steve Wynn. And he isnt just rough around the edges. Hes rotten to the core.
(snip)
A: Except he doesnt, starting with the Constitution. His plan to end birthright citizenship runs afoul of the 14th Amendment. His threat to open up those libel laws so he can sue his critics is a threat to press freedom. His attack on Mexican Judge Gonzalo Curiel was an assault on the American creed.
Q: That was just Trump spouting off.
A: What you call spouting off is an insight into Mr. Trumps mind. It betrays an instinctive illiberalism. Thats why he attracts so much praise from Jean-Marie Le Pen and David Duke. Its why he keeps praising Vladimir Putin... Putin isnt respected. Hes feared. Any thoughtful conservative would sooner have an incompetent democratic government than an efficiently autocratic one.
(snip)
A: What makes you so sure that a man who disdains a strict interpretation of the Constitution would appoint strict constructionists?

(3,335 posts)So when the GOP and their ilk start talking about Mr Trump being a successful businessman, we should all chime in that notoriety is not the same as successful. Trump is the notorious DJT. He is the Kanye West of the NY building industry. I also like the synonyms for notorious. I think they fit Trump to a "T".
Some of the synonyms for "notorious" found on Thesaurus. com are: dishonorable, disreputable, questionable, scandalous, shady, shameful, unadmirable one, wicked, belied
Yep I think these sum up Trump very well.
