2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA winning map for Clinton, no rose colored glasses required.
With some polls rolling in showing a tighter race and what looks to be some bad news in Ohio and maybe Florida it might be helpful to look at the map below. This map is still a win for Clinton and doesn't require any rose colored glasses.

(11,605 posts)All of the states with bad polls recently are states Clinton does not absolutely have to win. If she can hold all the Kerry states plus Virginia and Colorado, she will be fine.
That said, state polls usually shift with national polls, though national polls reflect it first. If the national race tilts any more toward Trump, he can probably put some of the blue states on this map in play.

(50,986 posts)Florida, Nevada, and Georgia as well.
Clinton-Kaine have the vans fueling as we speak -- the ground game and the get-out-the-vote operation is ready to launch. Trump-Pence has nothing close, and I think that seals it for the blue team.

(2,495 posts)no one interprets me as saying we can't win in all those places, but if we don't, we can still win the election.

(3,635 posts)Even during the primaries, after Bernie won Michigan, some thought Hillary may struggle in Ohio but she won it (+14) pretty easily.
I also can't see her losing in Florida. She won the primary there by +30, it is an ideologically moderate state, and the demographics favor her. Trump is going to receive historically low support from latinos.

(31,384 posts)which I couldn't imagine until recently since Bill didn't take the state in either of his elections. But we're seeing Cooper
take quite a lead over our incumbent bigot Governor--especially now that the NCAA has pulled playoffs from NC over HB 2--and
a big win for Cooper could result in beneficial votes for Hillary. On top of that, you have the two Trump supporters
who were arrested--inside and outside the arena yesterday--for assaulting protesters when Trump appeared in
Asheville. You just might be seeing people turn on Trump because of the nastiness he has encouraged/supported against other people.

(8,922 posts)McCrory's polling gets worse. His decision not to veto that Bill is looking like an early Christmas gift to Dems here in NC.

(3,635 posts)NC has urban/metro areas, people from blue areas of the country have moved there for work, there is more diversity, etc.

(52,208 posts)it will be the first early-to-close critical state. many of these ideal scenarios for trump require that last 4 electoral votes from nh.
it's not the deciding swing state in the sense that we'll likely win it comfortably; but it's a key determinant in the sense that if trump can't win nh, it quickly becomes very, very unlikely that he'll win enough elsewhere to get to 270.

(3,635 posts)If Gore won NH, FL wouldn't have mattered.
NH is clearly the weakest state in the blue wall, not PA, as some think. PA is Clinton Country. I can't see her losing it under any scenario. It is not really a swing state, even moderate Republicans will vote for her there.
That being said, H/Dems really needs to step up their game, and try to expand the map and go for a landslide/mandate, which is possible if they do what they should be doing.

(3,166 posts)Gore lost NH by about 7,000 votes, I think. If he had only won there, Florida wouldn't have mattered. Trivia: in 2004, NH was the only state that flipped from Bush to Kerry. If only.......

(35,699 posts)Even seeing Florida, North Carolina, and Ohio going to Trump will probably have me drinking myself under the table. As it was I could hardly stand it when Virginia and Ohio took so long to drop for Obama in 2012. Although the Rove meltdown made it well worth the wait!

(15,368 posts)But I sincerely believe that this depiction of reds and blues is overly optimistic for Trump - even without those states shown as toss-ups, which Hillary will more likely than not carry.
If he continues as he has been - which in all probability he will - he may even lose some of the red western states, especially in the northwest. But I am very happy to have him and all GOPers take those states for granted for now.
