of the time, he repels progressives, validates his supporters' limitations, and tricks the (all-too-willing) media to grant him free publicity.

Romney was so conservative that he was imbalanced, IMO, and therefore dangerous. But Romney's dangerousness was a controlled, smooth, almost robotic, Aqua-Velva danger, where Trump's is visceral and explosive. Trump incites violence with his tongue. He's a bullhead catfish thrashing around in a mudhole, the loudmouth drunk at the end of the bar barking at the tv.

The media is trying so hard to make this a close race, and Trump is doing otherwise.
