2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWe're working, folks! Please post some words about what
you're talking about. It's nice that you can be watching the TeeVee, but most of us cannot. Just a sentence about what the hell is going on would help.
Context, please!

(49,001 posts)OPs can take 15 seconds and provide context. It would save hundreds of readers spending minutes chasing around the net trying to guess which story.
But vain people think saving 15 seconds is a good balance of time usage. Some of them are colored orange.

(2,056 posts)Trump tricked the media into thinking he was going to make a significant statement about his birther nonsense. Instead he spent 30 minutes showing military people praising him and then showed off a new hotel. He spent all of under 30 seconds on the birther issue and all he said was that Hillary's 2008 Campaign started the birther movement and he finished it and implied that we all should be grateful for the massive favor he did for America by forcing Obama to share his birth certificate. The whole time he had a disgusting smirk on his face like he was so impressed and proud of himself.
So yeah, the press are pissed.

(2,056 posts)He did say he believes Obama was born in the US, too. No apology, no taking responsibility. Just blamed Clinton, tooted his own horn and was his usually disgusting self.

(6,355 posts)Cable networks cut to it when they started.
20+ minutes of Vets, Medal of Honor winners and the like, praising The Donald and what a wonder guy he is. Amazing businessman. Wonderful supporter of the military. Strong guy - all the usual bullshit. Networks covered it all.
Don comes out, says 2 minutes effectively saying "Look...Hillary started this birther thing but I'm here to put it to rest and say BHO was born in the US".
Then he invites the press to go on a tour of his new hotel...and they go...live.
What a f'ing infomercial.
(sorry...more than a sentence.)

(13,776 posts)cnn.com didn't go into detail about how full of BS this "press conference" was, so thank you for telling us what it was really like!

(58,648 posts)Media focuses on his empty podium expecting him to reverse his stance on bertherism.
He's late, of course, has to have his entrance.
Starts off with a 20 minute infomercial about his new hotel.
Has a bunch of Medal of Honor awardees present, who proceed to file to the podium to kiss his ass.
He gives a curt statement that Hillary started the birther movement, claimed he ended it by "forcing" Pres Obama to show his BC. Says Obama was born in the US and walked off.
No questions, but he took the press on a tour of his new hotel.

(13,776 posts)It's helpful to know what was different about this particular bit of bloviating that seems to have finally pissed off the media.

(5,049 posts)They were roundly kicking Trump's ass and calling him out for his lies and distortions. I switched to M$NBC where Andrea Mitchell somehow turned Trump's event in to a failure by Hillary Clinton to get beyond the birther nonsense in her speeches. What a tool that woman is...
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,683 posts)in DC. It was also supposed to be some sort of celebration of veterans. Then he made a grumpy 33-second statement that Hillary started the birther movement and he was ending it, and admitted Obama was born in the US. After making his statement Trump took photographers on a tour of the hotel but his people physically blocked the pool producer from going with them (so no questions could be asked - photos only). CNN people are steamed. I think Ashley Banfield is going to start throwing thing. She used the words "birther crap." CNN and MSNBC are just furious at being conned into doing an infomercial for his hotel. Now CNN is gleefully fact-checking and showing video of all the times Trump said Obama wasn't born in the US and challenged him to produce his birth certificate.
This will be a BFD. The media finally figured out that they were being played.

(2,338 posts)All morning we listened to news outlets tout how Trump would hold a presser to discuss his birtherism.
At his new DC hotel no less. They had a soft-opening of the hotel earlier this week.
His first remark was to praise his hotel.
Followed by a series of veterans lavishing him with praise.
Until the media started cutting away.
Then he jumped in and simply said, "President Barack Obama was born in the United States." Then said that HRC started the birther stuff first and he just finished it. No doubt as a service to the American public. /sarcasm/. Then fled the podium and took a select group of press on a tour of the hotel but answered no questions.
Essentially, it was an infomercial for his new shiny toy. Media is pissed at being duped and are really hitting back.
