Scutt Farcus and his toady accomplice are the town bullies who, when confronted, aren't so tuff.

It's a now cult movie based on a Jean Sheppard novel, "In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash". It plays, non stop on TNT or TBS (can't remember) from 6pm Christmas Eve to 6pm Christmas Night.

It is worth a watch, if only to see Darren McGavin as the Dad. It is one of the funniest roles any actor has ever tackled.

It really is a great movie about growing up, in pre WW2 Ohio.

He and his wife introduced me to this movie as they watch it religiously every December. She's from New Jersey.

Well, I say religiously, as I know it's become a cult classic. You're right that it's about growing up, and not about Christmas -- they themselves are not Christian.

The last time I saw it, I was in the hospital. I had had breast surgery (mastectomy) on Dec 24 and, while waiting for the doctor to come in and say I was good to go, I turned on the TV to find this film was showing. It improved my mental state immeasurably.

Well, that and the doctor's report that the mastectomy seemed to have removed all the cancerous cells. But I still had to wait for a bit to have the biopsy confirm that.

It was, I believe, one of Darren McGavin's last movies, if not THE last. I was a longtime fan and he was absolutely great in this, as was Peter Billingsley. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Christmas_Story

My elementary school looked just like Ralphie's, inside and out.

The family home is now a museum in Cleveland. (Complete with Leg Lamp, I believe)
