An interesting take on Trump's apparent split personality

This article by Nicole Hemmer of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney suggests that the two faces we see are presented on purpose. The Bannon driven white supremacist, bigot, warmonger and the Conway slightly more subdued reader of policy from teleprompters. She theorises that each face is calculated to appeal to different sections of the electorate.

A tawdry tale of two Trumps

There are two starkly different candidates running for the American presidency in 2016. One has built a campaign on political racism and bullying, blending protectionist policies with deportation plans and Muslim bans in the hope of wooing white workers. His off-the-cuff, stream-of-consciousness speeches careen from threats of violence to promises of national greatness.

The other is pursuing an agenda of outreach and responsibility: detailed policy speeches read from teleprompters, visits to foreign leaders and to struggling communities, calls for national unity.

The problem is that both candidates are Donald Trump.

Think of them as New Trump and Trump Classic. Both have been hitting the campaign trail since Trump shook up his staff after the Republican convention. Since then he has been running two separate campaigns, in the hopes of holding on to his longtime supporters while reaching out to white voters anxious about his divisive candidacy. And at the moment, it appears to be working.

A con man says what he needs to draw in the mark. Trumps marks are willing to give him a pass on some stuff as long as he feeds them the lines they like.

I think he's gone now.

Trump can't change. And he doesn't want to.
