...it said "I'm Donald Trump and I approve this message".

I assumed it was his.

He is making both national and state buy ads
Was the ad internal to a show or at top or bottom of hour?
Were there any local business commercials before or after Trumps ad?

They often make a buy that the whole country sees during a network commercial break.
They also make buys on local stations in swing states during a local commercial break.

I would be very surprised if Trump bought a local tv station commercial in very expensive media markets in California (a state that he has no chance of winning).
What I'm sure you saw was a national commercial break that the whole country saw.

I'd guess those nation wide ads are trolling for campaign donations. That is their purpose I suppose?

The national profile of your own candidate or denigrate the profile of the other.
Most donation requests come online, or in emails, texts, or direct mail.

Despite the much-hyped blueness of Illinois, we have a billionaire Republican governor who's spending a LOT of his moolah to buy himself a legislature that won't keep shooting down his pet "turn around" agenda. What is in that agenda, you may ask? He's modeling himself on his idol to the North... the destroyer of Wisconsin .... Scott Walter.

Unfortunately, the Trump campaign's hyper positive flag waving, change promising commercial is very compelling as a happy clappy sales piece. It's got all the bells, whistles a low information voter could ask for. It's positively terrifying.

On the other hand, judging from the Trump mailing piece I got yesterday, his direct mail company is targeting strictly by either zip codes or Congressional district instead of more sophisticated micro-targetting. I'm in a redistricted to red CD in rapidly bluing DuPage County. My repellant congressman is Peter Roskam, so the campaign may have used his full constituent list. Roskam was one of the founders of ALEC, which was actually started in Chicago of all places.
