2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumWhat do you think of Twitter?
I never thought much for when it began and I still don't think much of it.
It permits just enough characters to get you in trouble. Short snips of brainfarts that can be misinterpreted and not easily explained.
It must be very popular for those that don't like to put several thoughts together. It is easy to type a sentence and hit "send".
How often do we hear of people getting into trouble for something they might "tweet" as opposed to something that they have written that they may have put more thought into?
Personally, I do not see the appeal of Twitter but different strokes for different folks, I guess?

(34,136 posts)People who have no capability to screen their inner thoughts can dump that drek on Twitter and let the rest of us see their slimey souls.
That can happen on a forum like this but most of the time I suspect people here check what they have written and self censor. I know there are a lot of my posts that got erased without ever seeing the forum pages!

No doubt it is THE place for fast news and commentary. You can get links to news and if you follow the right people some really good stuff.
I follow lots of news people who are on the liberal end of things, like Joy Reid. Also I follow and interact with lots and lots of Hillary supporters.

It takes a lot of care and thought to do good tweets in such a short way, but the fun people always do.
It's also really good when there is a fast breaking story. I liked it when we had the earthquake here in Oklahoma. Other Okies got on and shared stories and some silliness too.
Edit to add: just went to twitter. This is the kind of fun stuff you can read.

Just got a front row seat to watch @HillaryClinton overwhelm @realDonaldTrump at the "Humbling at Hofstra" on Monday. It Is On !
I recently registered for a twitter account, using a pseudonym like another poster, and am using it to follow The Young Turks, PNHP, and local weather.

That sound you just heard is a thousand coal execs simultaneously screaming "FUUUUUUUUUCK!"

DC Circuit order indicates Judge Pillard is no longer sitting out Clean Power Plan case. Garland still out.
Already old news in Twitter time when I read this, but it's huge. The Clean Power Plan is the EPA mandate for states to curb carbon emissions from their electricity providers. 26 states took it to court, endangering the commitments to 2% carbon reduction we made at the Paris climate talks.

(4,452 posts)Back when Chris Hayes did the weekends and was worth watching he had Alexis Goldstein as part of the panel. She brought up the rethug JOBS act that had nothing to do with jobs, just another big wet kiss to business. I had no choice but to say thank you in the most direct manner possible. Twitter is a tool like all other forms of media and communication. Use it well and it's an angel, otherwise it will be at best a distraction but more likely a tool of disinformation.

(37,364 posts)had a definite impact by calling the media out in real time and changing the way Hillary is covered. It has also helped push Trump's ignored scandals into the light. I don't know if I'd use it after the election is over. It is a tool that can be used for good or bad. just a note that Farenthold's research and writing on Trump and his foundation scam was tweeted around before it made its appearance in print and broadcast media.
