2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Atlantic calls Trump out for what he is: CRUEL.
This article brings it home. Trump has a lifetime record of cruelty, personally, in business, in every interaction where he thinks he can get away with it. Call it what it is. Cruel.

(9,895 posts)It boggles the mind to think that our politics have become so personal, so poisoned that there are people out there who are utterly incapable of making a moral decision any longer.
If Donald Trump is actually elected - and about 6 weeks ago I thought it was utterly inconceivable, but not today - this country deserves the shitstorm that will follow. To the rest of the world, to those shaking their heads in utter disbelief, I offer a proactive apology...I have tried to sway the opinions of many people here in East Kansas, USA (also known as Missouri) to no avail.
My fellow citizens of this backwater state are intractable in their hate and fear and seem to not care one whit about the dangers a President who owes money to Russian mobsters presents.
To the future generations that will spend their lives cleaning up the mess this madman will create, I am sorry. I have tried and I am failing. I hope others are having more success, but I fear for your futures more than my own.

(23,099 posts)If this country wants to put a cruel, heartless, mean, lying all the time, narcissistic, selfish, lazy, oligarch in office, then it's not the place for me.

(36,926 posts)There are many notable exceptions, and one can only hope that these people become world leaders. It definitely does NOT always happen. I think it will this election, however.

(18,124 posts)are cruel, always have been. Just did not feel they could openly express that cruelty until their fuhrer rose to give them the thumbs up to be openly, who they are. Modern descendants of the old time lynch mob with blood in their eyes and reveling in the blood on their hands. It sure will be interesting to see if they are the majority on November 9, 2016.

Oh, really? Please give us a break. Making it sound like there is some equivalence.
And so it continues.

We have to make the liars explain exactly what they mean when they say dishonest, wrongheaded, possessed of bad judgment and their other sweeping generalizations.

(43,161 posts)Not only will we get three 'crooked Hillary's'
but also two 'old babes' and a 'frump'?
It would fit his modus operandi based on what he's
said about others in the campaign

No, you dumbasses, cruelty is not strength! Cruelty is a coward's idea of strength. Real strength requires kindness when possible and firmness when necessary, but never cruelty.

I had known for some time she was a Trump supporter. Months ago I hid her posts from my wall, but would check
in on her page from time to time. This is someone who I went out of my way to support when her father died--by attending the funeral--
and had reached out to her over the course of several years.
I'm done. Someone who is proud to be 'deplorable'? Sorry, but I can no longer support someone like that.

(17,218 posts)Conservative writer Mona Charen reflected on the same era in National Review:
I first became aware of Donald Trump when he chose to make cheating on his first wife front-page news. Donald and Ivana Trump broke up over the course of months. Not that divorce is shocking, mind you. Among the glitterati marriage seems more unusual. Nor is infidelity exactly novel.
But it requires a particular breed of lowlife to advertise the sexual superiority of ones mistress over the mother of ones children. That was Trumps style. He leaked stories to the New York tabloids about Ivanas breast implantsthey didnt feel right. Marla Maples, by contrast, suited him better. She, proving her suitability for the man she was eager to steal from his family, told the papers that her encounters with the mogul were the best sex Ive ever had. It wasnt just Donald Trumps betrayal that caught my eye, nor just the tawdrinessit was the cruelty.

By Mona Charen
Here's another good excerpt:
A normal, well-adjusted man does not go to great lengths to prove to a random journalist that he has normal-sized fingers. Some may think it was Rubio who introduced the "small hands" business, but it actually dates back to an encounter Trump had 25 years ago with journalist Graydon Carter. Carter had referred to Trump as a "short-fingered vulgarian" in Spy magazine. Trump could not let it go. Carter told Vanity Fair in 2015:
"To this day, I receive the occasional envelope from Trump. There is always a photo of him generally a tear sheet from a magazine. On all of them he has circled his hand in gold Sharpie in a valiant effort to highlight the length of his fingers. ... The most recent offering arrived earlier this year, before his decision to go after the Republican presidential nomination. Like the other packages, this one included a circled hand and the words, also written in gold Sharpie: 'See, not so short!'"
Notice he didn't contest the "vulgarian" part of the insult. And remember that at a presidential debate, for God's sake, Trump brought it up himself and assured the world that "there is no problem. I guarantee." I don't believe that guarantee, and I'm not talking about his genitals.

(16,926 posts)That he's doing that - and admitting who it is that's doing that (talking Drumpf here) - what kind of demented person has the GOP given us?
MADem
(135,425 posts)Enough. Wake up. Look at this man with fresh eyes.
People disagree about the ideal traits to have in a leader. But almost no one wants a president who has proven himself an addict to being cruel, mean-spirited, and spiteful. For decades, Trump has been deliberately cruel to others, often in the most public ways. He behaves this way flagrantly, showing no sign of shame or reflection.
What kind of person still acts that way at 70? A bad person.
It is that simple.
Giving a cruel man power and expecting that he wont use it to inflict cruelty is madness. To vote for Trump, knowing all of this, is to knowingly empower cruelty.
Better to recoil in disgust.
