where behind close doors he was like a fast-talking drill sergeant in complete control of the situation and detailed facts, but a bumbling, genial grandpa when the public came though.

you can't make comedy out of having a trump character say outlandish thing, reality trumps that. you have to go the other way, make comedy out of having trump appear normal and capable.
