2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumhas it not occurred to anyone that maybe trump provoked holt?
of course we've all noticed that trump interrupted and was disrespectful to hillary. but then, we all knew that would happen.
but trump also interrupted and disrespected holt, starting with his very first moment, forgetting to thank holt and hofstra (this after hillary even showed him the way).
whatever you think of holt's objectivity, bias, or whether or not he should be fact-checking, or happened to be right or wrong on any particular comment -- everyone knows that if you treat someone like dirt, they might not give you your preferred behavior in return.
maybe holt was just responding naturally to being treated poorly by a jerk, and trump got exactly what he deserved.

(52,209 posts)it's not reasonable to complain about being unfair after you were just unfair and rude to them.
personally, i do think holt did the right thing to push back, at least try to be more engaging than invisible like he was most of the time. i don't think it was out of petulance.
but i don't think trump has a leg to stand on even if it was. if what he got was petulance, then it was his own damn fault.

(49,001 posts)Of course time in front of the camera helps poise. And theoretically journalists are familiar with the facts.
Holt was moderating. He wasn't "fact-checking", unless it is meant "checking" like a hockey check. He knew the facts because he had checked them previously before the debate. "Fact-checking" is mis-used by many people who really mean "holding to the facts" or "holding feet to the fire" or "asserting the facts in the face of a lie". Fact checking is done behind the scenes at computer monitors and at phones and in libraries.
Holt was moderating. He wasn't investigating a story or writing a news story.
Holt could have moderated a bit more severely to keep Trump to time better.

(58,649 posts)I thought he was amazingly restrained, but Trump's bullshit on racial matters is kind of personal to Holt, you know.
I don't think I would have blamed him if he had ripped of his earwig and walked off the stage.
He was pretty good, overall, including in biting his tongue when Trump showed how ignorant and uncaring he is about racial issues.

(28,795 posts)nobody I saw on msnbc/cnn said a word about how rude he was; contrast that to the huge deal they made of Gore's rudeness to dumbo
