2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSo how is Tim Kaine as a debater?
I like him a lot. He is respectful, honest, compassionate...all the things that make on a "loser" in the eyes of the voters.
Pence is screwed by ultra RW but nasty as a debtor

(7,570 posts)I shit you not. When I heard that on the news this morning, I spat out my coffee. Scott Walker.

(14,913 posts)he started as a talk radio guy, and is a VERY polished and comfortable talking points disseminater.

(7,570 posts)I just think it's hilarious that the only Kaine stand-in they could find is quite possibly one of the dumbest Governors in the United States.

(14,913 posts)what republican could they possibly get that has Kaine's decency and civility.
Probably threw them off.

(3,768 posts)He's 8-0 in elections, has been a successful mayor, governor, senator - with an excellent command of policy and issues, moderate/bipartisan approach to problem solving, etc.
Don't mistake his nice guy image for wimpiness, he will reveal Pence for the failed governor and xtian extremist he is, and go hard at Don the Con (which is what I think most of his time will be spent doing).

(3,398 posts)One thing for sure in my mind he is a really likeable sincere person. And I think that will come out in the debates. He should score high in some of the polling questions afterward. Like do you trust him? etc.
Pence on the other hand comes off as a self serving jerk. Someone who drew the short straw and gets to follow a dipshit running around. The minute he has to defend dipshit will be the telling moment. If you watched him other times he really comes off as fake. The debates I'm sure will show that.

(38,101 posts)Good lord. Pay fucking attention and be fair.
This OP is an attempt to get DU to understand how our opposing voters see our candidate.

(14,274 posts)As fair as I can be at this point.
I've been paying attention to many of the OP's posts.

(14,913 posts)As most noted about MJ today, they see Hillary bumping back up and are spinning HARD to tear her down and try to prop Trump up.
They are absolutely going to come into this with the bias of wanting to call a Pence win.
As others in this thread note - Kaine is a rock solid politician, pretty clearly under rated.
But, Pence is solid, too. YES, his positions are horrific to us. But, he is a former talk radio guy who is a VERY practiced and comfortable talking points disseminater.
The best we can hope for her is the POS media calling it a tie, IMO, assuming it plays out like it looks like it will, both being fairly solid with no major gaffes. But, make no mistake, the Rs are desperate and will jump on a "sigh" or some other bullshit with Kaine and the media will GLEEFULLY run with it ... I can very easily see a frame where the Kaines affable nature is spun negatively while Pence is cast as some ROCK SOLID, TOUGH GUY who this country needs during these dark times or some bullshit like that.

Tim Kaine was also on Obamas VERY short list for VP, along with Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden.

(9,097 posts)I really liked Hillary explanation of choice that Kaine needs to memorize: when governments control personal control you get Chinese quotas, Iranian stoning, and all kinds of interventions that the US doesn't want to start on...so it's a personal decision what you believe.
That will come up for sure.

Kaine received his B.A. in economics from the University of Missouri in 1979, completing his degree in three years and graduating summa cum laude. He was a Coro Foundation fellow in Kansas City in 1978. He entered Harvard Law School in 1979, interrupting his law studies after his first year to work in Honduras for nine months from 1980 to 1981, helping Jesuit missionaries who ran a Catholic school in El Progreso. While running a vocational center that taught carpentry and welding, he also helped increase the school's enrollment by recruiting local villagers. Kaine is fluent in Spanish as a result of his year in Honduras.
After returning from Honduras, Kaine met his future wife, first-year Harvard Law student, Anne Holton. He graduated from Harvard Law School with a J.D. degree in 1983. Kaine and Holton moved to Holton's hometown of Richmond, Virginia, after graduation, and Kaine was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1984.
Kaine will do just fine.

(15,443 posts)I haven't had a lot of exposure to Senator Kaine as Secretary Clinton's running mate was not a make or break factor for me. I decided early on that she would have my vote.
What little I have seen of Senator Kaine has impressed me. He's obviously very knowledgeable and savvy, and I agree with the OP as to his integrity, compassion and honesty.
I wish him the best in the debate tonight because I know that Pence is going to get down and dirty. It would be difficult for ANY candidate to maneuver against an opponent (like Pence and/or Trump) who lacks integrity, honesty and compassion.
So...Go, Tim, Go!!!!!!!!!
