2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI am taking an "undecided" voter to lunch this weekend
Honestly I do not know how anyone could be undecided by now..but I have a couple of friends who seriously claim they are.. I am going to do my best to talk some sense into them.. They voted Nadar against Gore.. they just have a bee in their bonnets about Clinton.. and they dislike Hillary because of Bill.. its nuts.. but I am going to give it my best shot.. I live in too red an area to let any Independent go without at least sitting down an going over their concerns the best I can.. wish me luck..

There have been occasions in the pats where one of the "larger" third parties actually presented themselves well and with consistency. I think I have discussed my respect and appreciation for the Green Party in the past with you. But this year that just isn't out there. The only way anyone can be voting for a third party is to simply make a statement that they are so far outside at this point that it doesn't matter. Both parties are the same on steroids. The problem with that this year is that it's a position no thinking person can hold. There is a massive gulf between Trump and Clinton. Massive.
I don't get how people are currently undecided outside of not knowing if they are going to vote at all.

(4,377 posts)But I think a lot of people assume Clinton will win because the idea of Trump winning seems preposterous. This could be seen as a reason to put votes to the third parties to try and give them a boost and finally make them start to be relevant. Dangerous thinking, but I think it could be swaying some people that way.

(58,785 posts)about what you hope this next administration will accomplish that's important to you? Stay on issues and away from the Clintons? Most people haven't actually seen much of Hillary before, so that last debate opened some eyes a bit. Who knows, after softening this one a bit tomorrow, perhaps your friends will also be a bit more receptive after the next one.
In any case, best wishes for producing another vote.

(8,998 posts)Just ask them to specify any Hilary lies? Many of which are bogus and not factual.
Write them down. It won't take long.
Reveal the drumph list and compare.
Ask for verification about Hilary claims and rebutt with facts. IE; Benghazi.
If they do not respond do a runner?

(3,335 posts)sexist. Ask them what other presidential candidate would they have voted against simply because they didn't like their spouse. Would they have rejected Barack Obama because they didn't like Michelle? Would they have rejected John Kerry because they didn't like Teresa Heinz Kerry? or All Gore because they didn't like Tipper? Or Jimmy Carter because they didn't like Rosalind? Was Laura Bush a factor in their decision to vote for or to reject George W. Bush as a candidate? If they wouldn't have, then treat Bill Clinton as if he were just another spouse. I can't think of any presidential candidate in my lifetime, where the spouse was a relevant issue, and Bill will be just another spouse who hopefully we will hear less and less of, especially the way he's been spouting off lately.

(2,650 posts)It is always best to tailor a message to that which the person you are interacting with will best respond.
We don't know those people you are meeting, so that isn't possible.
But as a fellow progressive who understands why people don't want to be wishy-washy about their principles, just challenge them to PLEASE join you and stand with you against those right wing fascists, and be a fellow soldier who stands up to them shoulder to shoulder with a wide array fellow humans who say "Not one step further!"
There is a time for detailed policy points/disagreements and a time to make a stand.
This is a time for US to stand strong TOGETHER.

(3,702 posts)Of course I can't remember where I read and I know you said your friends are undecided, but the point was made about how you ask questions and your tone of voice make a difference. If you sound judgmental, it just makes people defensive and double down, whereas if you are neutral and ask them specifics (what is it about Trumps economic plan do you like? What is important to you?) it keeps dialog open.
It was enlightening to me, I had lunch with a friend a month ago and when she made the "both are equally crooked, besides I never vote" speech I became slightly unhinged. Which of course did more to alienate her in the long run, I live in a such a bubble I forget that others actually get their info from Fox.
My current tactic of screaming "what the fuck is wrong with you" seems to put people off, so I stay home and shout at my tv and computer instead. My GOTV methods would consist mainly of slapping people into sanity or banging my head repeatedly against the wall.
Good luck to you

(156 posts)Looking afar from here in the UK we have watched your fights for equality for race, gender , sexuality etc over the decades
To myself and all my friends in the UK Trump embodies the opposite of those struggles. He will close down rights. Ignore your constitution, stir up hatred, shut down freedom of expression, speech, rights to marry, rotection of minorities
All those decades of struggle reversed with one election if he became president. For those of us outside the US voting for Hillary is a vote to preserve your freedoms and rights. It may be simplistic but then all things generally are
Hope it helps to get an opinion from outside the US. Have a great lunch

(297,405 posts)If they get to know the facts they'll see that trump and Hillary are 180 degrees so how could anyone not be able to decide? This is our Planet we're talking about.
You can do it! Yes We Can..
Oh, and I just saw this..
Ralph Nader Supporters Warn Third-Party Voters: Dont Make The Same Mistake!
Some of these Nader voters now work for the Democratic Party and deeply regret their 2000 vote.

And he wants to make sure that disaffected voters know exactly what theyre doing in this election before they go pull the lever for a third-party candidate like Jill Stein of the Green Party or Gary Johnson of the Libertarian Party.
I was somewhat uninformed and felt like there wasnt that big a difference between Gore and Bush, believe it or not, he said. Obviously, in retrospect, it was a moronic way to look at things.
