MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Gov. Scott Walker says he thinks that it would "much better" if Wisconsin did not have same-day voter registration.
Walker made the comments during a speech Friday night in California.
Walker's spokesman Cullen Werwie had nothing to add Monday to what Walker said.
Walker says in the speech that "It would be much better if registration was done in advance of Election Day, easier for our clerks to handle that."

(4,187 posts)What possible argument is there for not allowing people to register up to and on the day of the election?
If the goal is to make the clerks' jobs easier, why have any elections at all? Indeed, why have anything at all? Let's get rid of the post office to make the postal workers' job easier; let's get rid of fire departments to make the firefighters' jobs easier. We can make life so much easier for cops, construction workers, teachers, doctors .... Let's just all go live in caves and fend for ourselves.

(35,701 posts)voter registration. With their SS# (to determine citizenship status) and some proof of address and ID, there should be no reason why someone should not be able to register and vote the same day.

(11,607 posts)I know someone at DOJ talked about that recently, but can the president implement something like that by executive order? It seems like something that would require a law, and probably at the state level since states set their own requirements for registering.

(11,607 posts)Why is it suddenly a problem now? Did Wisconsin have problems with lines this year?
Obviously, I know Republicans want to end same-day because they think it helps Democrats, but I am curious if there were long lines or other problems that Walker can use to drum up support.

(13,570 posts)istration, you can WIN this fight in a BIG way at the voting booth. Do you WI folks have a referendum law? If not, then RUN on this in a very, very big way in 2014 and you WILL get back your legislature and you WILL re-take the governor's mansion.
