(81,299 posts)The main problem will be on the receiving end, unfortunately. My wish is that if they get the snot beaten out of them next month, it'll open their eyes and they might actually reform a little, or grow up a little. But there's a little bit of me that butts in and yells - "yeah, fat chance." I don't have a lot of confidence in the opposition. I don't believe they'll come to their senses. I don't have any faith that this will force them to acknowledge that we're all in the 21st century now, and things aren't the way they imagine were so in the 1950s.
I suspect most of 'em will remain in denial. A defeat won't encourage them to change their views, accept the reality outside of their beloved bubble world, admit they were wrong, or concede that times have changed and they have to change, too. Nobody wants to admit they were wrong. Especially those who've invested so much of their efforts and their hearts in this sad, pathetic, and sometimes even shameful illusion. How does one un-delude oneself? How does one unfasten from this Bizarro World they've embraced and cling to so desperately? A lot of 'em, I suspect, will refuse to do so. Because THEY believe THEY'RE right. And that God is on THEIR side. And it's kinda hard to climb down from that, much less concede that maybe it's time you join the rest of the modern world, and accept the changes that cannot be denied or ignored or avoided.
What's really worst for them, I suspect, is that they don't want to entertain the thought that they're wrong. But, sorry to say, they are!
- Women WON'T go back - especially not to coat hangers and back alleys, a subservient position or second-class-citizen status, being considered a man's property, or what we used to know as the "pink ghetto" portion of the job market.
- Gays WON'T go back into the closet. Nor will many of them, who've finally found love and happiness and have been able to sanctify their life partnerships, be willing to turn their backs on the gains they've struggled to make.
- People of color WON'T go back to a world where they're prevented from voting, prevented from getting ahead, prevented from achieving success, happiness, prominence, and full equality. Besides, they've now proven that they have every right to the Oval Office, every bit as much as any white male does.
We WON'T GO BACK. This is the 21st century and time marches FORWARD. NOT BACKWARD.

(56,828 posts)Most will use the first 3 excuses below interchangeably - a few will throw in the last item as well:
1) Trump is not a true Republican
2) Trump is not a true conservative
3) The (mythical) liberal Media was unfair to Trump
4) Trump was a friend of the Clintons and planted by them to make Republicans and conservatives look bad.
which gives you their usual corollary of: "If only we nominated a pure (or true) conservative, America would fall in love with him and we'd win in a landslide." (not that it's true - Republicans always have to moderate to appeal to the mainstream because conservative ideas are poisonous for the General Election)
A few of them will say that Trump had too much baggage to win
Even fewer will say that the party itself needs to change and be friendlier to women and non-whites, and to reject racism, sexism and xenophobia.
