WaPo- SNL’s final pre-election take: Biting criticism of Donald Trump’s media coverage

The irony is that WaPo engages in a frequent Fox News response to criticism. It refers to polls showing that the public's opinions match its coverage, therefore the media's coverage is actually fair. It does not occur to this commentator that the media has pushed a false equivalency narrative such that people actually believe that Hillary's use of a private email server is somehow as troubling as any of the numerous scandals surrounding Trump whether it be his taxes, his sexual assaults, his racism, or his ties to Russia.

This, of course, is a long-running theme of the campaign. Clinton's supporters have frequently argued that the media is obsessed with her email issue and that it has garnered entirely too much coverage, constantly overshadowing the controversial things that Trump has said.

For what it's worth, relatively few people seem to hold this view. A poll last week showed that 83 percent of likely voters think Clinton did something wrong with her email server, while 51 percent think she did something illegal.

In addition, as I wrote a couple of weeks ago, 43 percent of Americans think media coverage of Trump has been too negative, while just 11 percent say the same of Clinton. Just 17 percent of Democrats say the Clinton coverage has been too negative. Nearly as many Democrats, in fact, think coverage of Trump has been too negative — 13 percent.

But this hasn't prevented a narrative from forming among top Clinton supporters and media watchdogs that Trump has gotten a pass and Clinton has been unfairly targeted for relatively minor — or even nonexistent — sins. And it's a claim that resurfaces every time the polls tighten.

it's what they "feel."

One of the most egregious examples of how feelings were turned into facts at the RNC came about when Newt Gingrich was interviewed about why he won't admit violent crime across the country is actually down. Oliver showed the clip, and Gingrich's answer was infuriating. "No, that's your view," he said plainly, as if that should have ended the conversation. You take a view on whether the Ghostbusters reboot is worth your $10 or if Vermeer was the most influential Dutch painter of all time. Numbers and stats don't require your view.

This paragraph takes on new meaning with the FBI proving what utter partisan thugs they are:
Trump's campaign chairman Paul Manafort then went on record as saying the FBI's statistics on crime can't be taken as fact because the agency recommended Clinton not be charged for her private email embarrassment. What does he think should be taken as fact? Feelings, those fickly biochemical energies that change from the time you have breakfast to the time you have your midday snack. "People don't feel safe in their neighborhoods," Manafort told CNN. "I'm not sure what statistics you're talking about."
Funny, they totally believe the FBI now.

So WHY do people think this, if not because the news media gave the impression that it was a big deal, day in and day out? Seems like the result of stupid media coverage to me.

They shape the narrative, just like they shaped the narrative last week that the investigation into Clinton's email use was "reopened" rather than just reporting that a review of emails was underway - there was even speculation of indictment and suspect leaks were given legitimacy and now today, nothing. So give.me.a.break.
