What is wrong with Everybody Who Wants to Vote, Gets to Vote. Period!

Watching a Tweety rerun on MSNBC, it struck me once again. Why is there even a discussion about people showing up after the designated early voting period? Even if they did. So what? Voting is a right. It should not have an arbitrary cut-off. Designate a two week voting period in ALL states, during which the candidates are not allowed to run advertisements or hold rallies. The only thing they can do is GOTV. Here in the US, voting is made as difficult as possible. How is that democratic?

I grew up in Germany where voting is done on a Sunday. Still not as good as making Voting Day a holiday, but so much better than a weekday. Every town, no matter how small, has a polling place. I've never in my life seen a line to cast a vote - even in the largest cities. Voter registration is automatic because of the necessity of residency registration. Voter participation dwarfs that of the US. Surely we can improve on the ability of every citizen being able to vote here in the States, instead of making it more difficult each election cycle?

That's probably because people of that ilk see it as a privilege not a right (as it actually is). n Guy Whitey Corngood Nov 2016 #3

They live for short term success, never taking the long view.

That is what is "wrong" with your idea. The US, especially the Republicon party, are infested with delusions of white superiority. It reminds me of those wasps that inject their eggs inside other insects which then get eaten gradually. But please keep trying to get through to us. Please don't give up on us. Some of us are actually still alive in here.

In 1968 three civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi trying to register voters.

White racists could kill who ever they wanted and never get convicted for murder. Lynchings were common place as a voter intimidation method.

We have come a long way and have a long way to go.

And many more in the same vein. It's maddening. As I said, I grew up in Germany during the cold war and we were taught daily about our past atrocities and mistakes. We learned what happens when democracy is thwarted. I've watched the proverbial frog slowly coming to a boil here in the US in the last 15-20 years. It scares the shit out of me, to be honest.
