Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee attributed the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in part to restrictions on school prayer and religious materials in the classroom.
"We ask why there is violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools," Huckabee said on Fox News, discussing the murder spree that took the lives of 20 children and 6 adults in Newtown, CT that morning. "Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage?" Law enforcement has released few details on the alleged gunman, but Huckabee suggested that the separation of church and state may have spurred his rampage.
"[W]e've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability -- that we're not just going to have be accountable to the police if they catch us, but one day we stand before, you know, a holy God in judgment," Huckabee said. "If we don't believe that, then we don't fear that."
He said those suffering from a crisis from faith should look to God in the community's response to the violence. But he added that "Maybe we ought to let [God] in on the front end and we wouldn't have to call him to show up when it's all said and done at the back end."

Huck is harking back to a time that did not exist, except in private religious schools, which are still available today to anyone who wants them. The former public school prayer in the morning or grace before lunch was hardly the evangelical scenario he paints, though it did leave the door open for bigots to do their thing to nonconformers, which btw is why it got banned.
Sorry to have to say this, but the charming and likable Preacher Huck is an ass.

(14,532 posts)HUCKABEE: I dont know anyone in America who is a more effective communicator [than David Barton.] I just wish that every single young person in America would be able to be under his tutelage and understand something about who we really are as a nation. I almost wish that there would be something like a simultaneous telecast and all Americans would be forced, forced at gun point no less to listen to every David Barton message. And I think our country would be better for it. I wish itd happen.

(30,058 posts)Churches only have about an hour per week to reach everyone and this time is spent pushing hate of different groups and hate towards women like the stupid statements by Todd Akin. The churches are passing information there was going to be riots if Romney won the election and on and on. An abortion nut went into a church and milled a doctor and I heard many "conservatives" who thought this is a good thing, it is not good. Huckabee is a member of FOX news who pushes hate and lies, why doesn't he tell FOX what a bad job they are doing. Get the churches to bring Jesus into their hearts and show their members how to love one another as Jesus taught us to do. You will not bring in as much money but God has rewards for us later. Huckabee will eat his words before long, it seems to come to pass we are shown the light one way or another, in a time he should be showing compassion he wants to blame the schools, is this What Jesus Would Do, be a man of God and not a man of Satan.

(51,574 posts)Every morning, they chant we are "One nation, under God..." and yet it did not save them. As usual, Huckabee does not know what the fuck he is talking about. And the 20-year-old who shot up these kids did not go to that school. Those kids' lack of prayer did not cause their deaths. But leave it to Huckabee and the nutbag "Christians" to blame the tiny victims. Sick.
If there is a hell, Huckabee, you will be crackling in it for eternity.

Maybe that's why God is angry, huck? Exodus 15-3 The Lord is a man of war:
English Standard Version (©2001)
The LORD is a man of war; the LORD is his name.
Holman Christian Standard Bible (©2009)
The LORD is a warrior; Yahweh is His name.
King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)
The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keil and Delitzsch Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament
"Jehovah is a man of war:" one who knows how to make war, and possesses the power to destroy His foes. "Jehovah is His name:" i.e., He has just proved Himself to be the God who rules with unlimited might. For (Exodus 15:4) "Pharaoh's chariots and his might (his military force) He cast into the sea, and the choice (the chosen ones) of his knights (shelishim, see Exodus 14 ) were drowned in the Red Sea."

(13 posts)The Fundamental Christians on television never cease to amaze me with their bullshit. Huckabee's latest reasoning is just another head scratcher in a long line from the right. Remember when Pat Robertson claimed that the earthquake in Haiti was a result of a deal the Haitians made with the devil? Or, that Hurricane Katrina was divine retribution for America's abortion policies?
No, natural disasters don't happen because God is mad at us. Their thinking is straight from 1000 years ago when the village elders would explain that an eclipse happened because one of them was masturbating too much. So, they would burn him at the stake...and just for good measure sacrifice a virgin to make God happy.
This tragedy didn't happen because we have a separation of church and state in America. It didn't happen because we banned school prayer. It happened because a sick individual was too easily able to get his hands on a gun.

(16,993 posts)I've never understood religious zealots who believe there is an angry God, just looking for a reason to smite people. But the same people who are telling these zealots that's the way it is are also asking them to send money, because that will save them. Send us money, we will pray for you. Buy our crap, you will be saved.
I agree completely that much of this is based on beliefs from eons ago, and we depend on the interpretation of people from that time to be factual and accurate. Whether it truly is or not, is something we'll likely never know for certain.
Guns are too easy to obtain today, and we are seeing all too frequently the results of this ease of access.
Thanks for posting, and again, welcome to DU!

(533 posts)That a vengeful God isn't founded on the New Testiment, which is supposed to be a new deal, and the foundation of Christian theology. Supposedly, God was done with meddling in human after he sacrificed his son. And so belief in him is he only way to salvation, not by being compelled by divine ordered natural ( or in this case human) events.
What these jokers believe is comes more from classic paganism-- rain hasn't come because we made Zeus angry kind of stuff.
This originated when Middle Eastern Christiananity mixed with the paganism in tribal Europe. Want to drivea fundamental-nut crazy? Tell his belief is pagan and not supported by the New Testiment ( nor old which refers to Israel only.)
