New Jersey's Cory Booker Problem

Cory Booker may be "America's favorite mayor," but in New Jersey, his fast rise and transparent ambition has rankled many establishment Democrats, who suggest he's putting himself above his state party.
The Newark Mayor's December announcement that he'd "consider" a Senate bid in 2014 — a decision that followed a long, public deliberation played out on Sunday shows and cable news — may have served to raise his national profile. But Democratic insiders complain that it upended the state's political landscape, making Republican Governor Chris Christie, without Booker challenging him, a virtual lock to win re-election, and setting in motion an intra-party war that has the state choosing sides between Booker and the 88-year-old incumbent Senator Frank Lautenberg.

By the morning of Booker's video announcement, the call to supporters was already out and a political action committee was poised to send an e-mail blast to 75,000 potential Booker-for-Senate donors — "Cory Booker is running for Senate,” the email said. The group, PAC Plus, now plans to contact 500,000 supporters over the next month, with a goal of raising $100,000 for Booker by June, director Steve Phillips told BuzzFeed. The Senate run that Booker said he would “explore” — a “possibility,” he called it in his announcement video — was in high-gear from day one.As a N.J. Democratic official put it, “Booker is running — that’s the bottom line.”

“No one in the state ever thought he was running for governor,” said the official. “That was all bullshit. Christie owns him, but he was really being pushed by other power brokers in the state who are much more concerned about the down-ballot effect of what could potentially be a slaughter in 2013.”Already late in the race, only one Democrat — progressive state Senator Barbara Buono — has officially declared herself a contender. Other possible Democratic candidates include Rep. Bill Pascrell, former N.J. governor Dick Codey, and state Senate president Stephen Sweeney, who received a call of encouragement from Booker himself last month.
The party is also faced with the uncomfortable dynamic Booker’s Senate race has created surrounding Sen. Frank Lautenberg, one of the most respected, storied figures in the state’s political history, who also happens to be 88 years old and hell bent on staying in office — or at least retiring on his own terms.Although Lautenberg would be 90 years old in 2014, running a re-election bid for a six-year term, he has not publicly indicated even the impression that he wants to retire.

2. Cory Booker for Senator 2014! The above article posted appears to be republican attempt to divide
Sat Jan 5, 2013, 06:00 AM
Jan 2013

For one thing, Lautenberg already was retired a few years back, out of the senate when due to a scandal of the newer senator, Robert Torticelli, and the fact that Bill Bradley whined, took his ball and left the arena altogether, and with time running short, no suitable candidate was found to replace Tortecelli, they begged Lautenberg to come out of retirement and he did. Nobody had forced Lautenberg to retire.
(for one thing, had he not wanted to retire, he would have kept his seniority in tact, which he lost when retiring and came back as a new senator, instead of now being one of the five most senior).

Boo hoo for the republicans who thought they might have an easy go.

And well, there are always losers in each election, and it seems like whomever wrote this article would have loved Christie to kick Booker's ass.
Seems like Booker, like our great President Obama, gets people riled up for some reason or other.

But why should Booker have wasted a run losing to Christie. Nobody is going to beat Christie after Sandy. It is political suicide to run a race and waste a big name.

Better to keep the seat.

As said, there is NOTHING to indicate Lautenberg would run again, and he has NOT said anything indicating that. In fact, all his annoucements about not talking politics now lead one to definitely believe he would retire in 2014, as he is not fundraising or getting a reelection campaign started.
And why wouldn't someone like Pascrell run for governor instead? Richard Codey was governor for a short time and gave it up in the past, why didn't he run instead of Corzine last time?
That would have made sense.

So again, this article appears to be slanted into an anti-Cory Booker rage rant.
Makes me wonder what ulterior motive or angle the writer has.

Thank God we have great people like President Obama and Mayor Cory Booker and Gov. Deval Patrick and Senator Lautenberg in this nation. People wanting to be in the public sector and not take the money and run in the private sector.
Wish we could find people like both of them to stock each and every mayor, governor, house, senate seat in the nation.

There won't even be a major challenge in the primary, nor should there be.
Great citizens like Cory Booker are the nation (would say the cliche future of the nation, but as they are here and now, they are the nation2013).

Wouldn't mind seeing him or Deval Patrick as Hillary45's VP in 2020 if she should pick, say Joe Biden to create history in 2016 making Joe Biden the longest VP ever (#1 VP of all time), and pick someone in 2020 to have another 8 year continuation of President Obama for 2024 in 2020. We could get the court 9 to 0 by Jan. 2033.

Mayor Booker makes America and all Democrats proud!
Makes me proud that I can finally vote for him being a NJ resident.
New Jersey blue forever!
And he has revitalized Newark and made it into a place that people all over the world now go for entertainment and sports at the Newark Prudential center. Don't think it would have happened without Mayor Booker.Way in the future, they should change the name of the Prudential Center to the Cory Booker Prudential Center.

Wonder how much crap Mayor Booker is going to have to put up with in his career.
Will people be resorting to birther and other lies like they have done to President Obama?
You can count on it. It's too bad America hasn't grown passed all this crap.

First-hand experience.

I hope Lautenberg or the establishment Democratic candidate who replaces Lautenberg on the ballot kicks Booker's ass; his political career needs to end badly.

He should have taken the gubernatorial run that was being handed to him...he'd have given Christie a run for it. Now he's selling out NJ...ass. We're going to lose town-councils, school boards and mayoral races statewide because of him. We're going to lose the governor's race because of him.

Cory Booker: ass ass ass all day long, he's an ass. I will brook no positive comments about the man...I've met him. He's all up in political office, trolling.

Booker is extremely popular in Newark and has done a great job - I think the problem is that he jumped the gun to say that he would run for Senate in 2014. It might have created a nasty situation that it was NOT needed.

Lautenberg, who is a far better Senator than Menendez, should have been given a chance to say if he was running or not first. It is reasonable to challenge him - especially given his age - but common decency suggests that Booker would have been wise to speak to Lautenberg first.

Menendez had mediocre approval ratings last fall, but was, like Obama, easily reelected. He is pretty right wing on Cuba and in 2009 held up several EPA appointments over Cuba policy. He is also pretty hawkish on Iran.

foreign policy in relationship to Iran doesn't matter to me.
Do not care except that Hillary45 was the best SOS ever and will win the Nobel Peace Prize next year on her way to being the next President45
It will be a lifetime before we see a SOS as good as she was.
Menendez won bigger than Elizabeth Warren did.It wasn't even due to President Obama's coattails like Warren's.

Lautenberg has by not starting up a reelection, indicated he would not be running again.
After all, he was already retired when he, FOR THE GOOD OF THE PARTY came back after the Torticelli scandal (whereas people like Bill Bradley whined and whined and took his NBA basketball back home and left the arena.) I love Frank Lautenberg, but he is indicating he is not running, and giving people (AS SHOULD BE) a two year head start.

Menendez of course is a victim of racism as every minority is.As is Cory Booker.

They both upset the old boy network in NJ.(Which is why Codey is not Governor because of that.)
Some of the behind the scenes people in the smoked filled roooms in NJ act like they are Godfathers.

Democrats were in the minority in the US Senate and he despised Torricelli.
In 2002- when Democrats had a one seat majority in the US Senate-Torricelli, Lautenberg's enemy was leaving for good- Lautenberg ran to save the seat from going Republican.
In 2008- Democrats were in the majority in the US Senate-Lautenberg could have retired in 2008 and let Pallone run for that seat. He decided to run for re-election at the age of 84.

20. When did Kerry do that? Why are bringing Kerry up here?
Sat Jan 5, 2013, 11:57 PM
Jan 2013

He ran in 1984 after Tsongus, a personal friend, gave him a head's up that he was not running. He did not run against an incumbent. (Tsongus ran and won the seat Kerry lost in 1972 in 1974 with the help of all the records the Kerry campaign saved - he had called Kerry to see if he were running again because he did not want to run against him. Kerry decided to go to law school instead. He returned the favor when he opted not to run in 1984.)

If you mean SOS, you do not run for that. HRC has spoken for at least 2 years that she is leaving. As to lobbying for the position Rice and her allies did; Kerry did NOT.

I have no problem with Booker running for the Senate seat, but it might have been nice to allow Lautenberg to announce he is not (or is) running first. I have seen Lautenberg at Democratic functions in the state he is personal and very very sharp. His vision comes from also being a son of immigrants immigrants who worked in Patterson's silk factories which destroyed their health. Laughtenberg fought in WWI and got an education at his dad's insistence on the GI bill. Lautenberg was great telling these stories and was very personable.

I have never seen Menendez even though I phonebanked for him in 2 elections. He WAS helped by the turnout for Obamand the fact his opponent was unknown. I met noone even in Dover - who was super enthusiastic about Menendez.

Sun Jan 6, 2013, 02:52 AM

applaud Cory for giving the Dems enough time to find a person to run for Gov.

If Lautenberg were going to run, the concern for the other candidates makes no sense, because they wouldn't run against him(or would they anyhow as it sure seems like they were going to run either way, therefore the concern for them is not warranted nor do they get mine).
Now those people are free to run for Governor. We don't owe them anything.
Politics is about the moment.

If you know politics, you also know Chris Christie is going to win so let them sacrifice themselves in a losing effort.

I myself was a Jim Florio fan.
People sold him down the river years ago, but wow, he raised taxes.
Because they were needed.
I would have still voted for him today.
Good person who got screwed. But left with his dignity at any rate.
Same with McGreevey.
Kicked out because he was gay, then Corzine had the balls to quit the Senate and force Codey out, who probably would have beaten Christie if Codey ran as incumbent, as he was well loved, except not by the Godfather like network of power behind the scenes.

So this old network, I pass on wanting to appease them.
They can go screw themselves as they care only about their own power base, and not for the wanting to make sure a democratic candidate is elected over winning their petty inner feuds with themsels.

If they did care more, Chris Christie would never have come close to winning as he did with lies.
Because Christie was a known journeyman hack type of entity, and we all knew he was not what he professed.

So that old boy network now has given the republicans a nationally known figure.

while tossing 4 different people aside(Including Corzine himself as he was basically disavowed before the election and seems like every single problem was then blamed on him).

Forgive me if I tell that old boy network not interested in what they are selling.

Senator Booker has a nice ring to it. There is NO republican in New Jersey who can beat him.
Therefore he accomplishes what the old boy network seemed to forget they wanted in the past.

One of these days would be nice if NJ got the corruption out.
Electing Cory Booker Senator is a great start to that.

IMHO of course.

And I applaud Bob Menendez for being the first minority to win Senate office in NJ
and I applaud in advance Cory Booker for being the first black to win Senate in NJ
There are NO black democratic senators now since Ray Burris(who replaced President Obama.)
That is a shameful thing. Time to change that.
(especially as the repubs just elevated Tim Scott to Senator.

And I am sure behind the scenes, Lautenberg knew about this and is fine by it.
He might have even said he would like to see this scenerio happen.
None of us can know that as we are all just regular people.

As just a regular person I myself go with my instinct and logic.
And my own personal wants as does everyone else.
And I want Cory Booker to win elective office in 2014.
And not lose to Chris Christie in a hopeless run. Nobody would defeat him after what he did with Sandy-and when the Boardwalk opens in Summer 2013, it is going to make such a great photo op that as popular as he is today state wide, Christie will be that much more.
And I am NOT as you know a Christie fan. Just a realist.

And it would be nice if Barney Frank or Vicky Kennedy were able to BE appointed to serve out the FULL term til 2014 and then run for reelection.

However, because of the John Kerry sitauation in 2004, the rules were changed and never changed back.

And the rest is again, YOUR humble opinion, that i disagree with.

Cory Booker will win the senate, easily.
Because the voters will vote overwhelmingly.
Cory does NOT need the bosses permission to run.

And they can't stop him.

And had someone else been available, Lautenberg probably would have remained retired but came back OUT OF PARTY LOYALTY to keep the seat BLUE.
(something that might not happen in Mass.)

I really think you shouldn't confuse the two issues.

And when push comes to shove. President Obama will support Cory Booker anyhow.
Therefore none of the others has a chance.

Let's talk honestly-Lautenberg won't run. Whether by his choice now or not, he won't run.
He won't run against Booker.
If Lautenberg wants to remain he will be given a job in the cabinet, or perhaps a commission.

After narrowly losing re-election to Whitman in 1993, he decided to make a comeback in 2000 but Corzine's $$$$ and traitorous Democratic pols like Torricelli,Lautenberg,Menendez,or Pallone decided endorse Corzine. Corzine won the 2000 US Senate Election by a 50-47 percent margin against Bob Franks then ran for Governor in 2005 and got defeated in 2009 by Christie.
Had Florio ran in 1996- he would have won the Democratic Primary over Torricelli- who did not have Corzine's $$$ and narrowly win the November General Election against Zimmer due to Clinton's coattails- Florio could tie Zimmer to the Gingrich Congress. Torricelli would not have set foot in the US Senate and left congress for good. Lautenberg would not be running for the US Senate after 2 years earlier.

24. NJ Democrats are not fans of primaries
Sun Jan 6, 2013, 11:41 AM
Jan 2013

Most of the time, the nominees are decided at county conventions beforehand. The winner of the convention gets the 'county line' on the primary ballot (they run under the ticket X County Democrats) and the loser can continue if he/she wishes, but most of the time they do not. (On the GOP side, many more continue after losing the convention, and some go onto win the nomination, see Anna Little).

My theory on why Booker would be a better governor and Pallone a better senator--- A mayor is an executive office as is governor. Congressman is a legislative office as is senator. It would make sense for an executive to run for the executive office and the legislator to run for the legislative office. (Note, I have met both Booker and Pallone several times and have helped both of their campaigns at one point or another. Pallone was my congressman until I was redistricted out of his district. In a primary, I would vote for Pallone over Booker one because I am on a first name basis with him and two I think he's much more progressive than Booker is. Pallone also puts the shore counties, typically bright red, in play as one of his top issues in Congress has been protecting the beaches.)

If the sacrificial lamb is not a good candidate, then you have a whole ticket that it brings down (I watched this happen in 2009 in a county that Christie won 2-1). The whole state legislature is on the ballot as will county and local races.

27. If Booker

Runs in and wins the Primary - I'm voting or him. I'm registered D - and that is that.

And Christie is going to win this November - so why have Booker weaken his candidacy for Senator by putting a loss under his belt? No one can beat Christie. Only way is if they get a TEA that can divide the right wing vote. If Daggett couldn't do it . . .

Eh? Ken Kaplan ran in Nj as a Libertarian. I bet if enough people blew some up his ass - we could get him to run for Governor. I would work on his campaign to help - but still vote for the Democratic Candidate. It would take someone with his money to disturb Christie's race.

He is "real" far and above nearly every other politician.

And a little reminder for Dem Leaders: We don't Have to "tow the line"--that's Why many of us Are Dems to begin with..we're free to have our Own opinions and style...
I cannot speak for anyone else but--I'm NOT going to allow myself to be pulled, for the sake of politics, Any further to the Right. If incoming GOP who have long given up on their own want to join? Yes, please do. We have a big tent. You are Welcomed here-But you Must assimilate to the Dem Party Platform, not the other way around.

I recommend not clicking on those and some other sites because doing so may put some money into their coffers.
