Ronald Reagan’s Childhood Home To Be Bulldozed For Possible Future Home Of Obama Library

http://www.mediaite.com/online/ronald-reagans-childhood-home-to-be-bulldozed-for-possible-future-home-of-obama-library/

President Ronald Reagan’s childhood home in Chicago is scheduled to be demolished. The University of Chicago recently purchased the property and announced that it intends to turn the property into a parking lot. According to a report in The Washington Times, that plot could soon be the parking lot for the future site of President Barack Obama’s presidential library.

I just saw a similar link - with a biased lead-in posted on FB by my nutty SIL.

There aren't too many people in my family that I choose to avoid - we certainly don't always have the same POV but our similarities and shared background usually trump our differences - but said SIL is a religious wacko and literally dangerous to anyone's mental health and well-being. The truly scary thing is that she is credentialed as a "Christian" psychologist - go figure.

Fortunately, it has always been my husband's choice not to go out of his way to see her and I have simply managed prudently to keep my mouth shut about - and to - her altogether.

Surely Ronald Reagan of all presidents would understand the need to put business before something as unprofitable as historical preservation.

******************************************************

Reagan lived there only a year when he was 4. Wasn't even sure of the location:

Many years later, President Reagan told a friend he'd once lived in Chicago, but didn't know the address. Reagan had always been frank about his dad's drinking. The friend scoured old arrest records, and found Jack Reagan of 832 E. 57th St., charged as a "drunk-and-disorderly.

The Moonie Times (and Daily Fail) are just trying to rile up the RW loonies. The site will become a parking lot for the University of Chicago medical center, not the Obama library. The only connection is the possibility that the university may host the eventual presidential library. But the plans have been in the works since at least 2004, when the university bought the property.

Yes, Reagan was a douche, but I'm tired of bulldozing good architecture in this city.

The university has a habit and history of bulldozing block of structures, many of them dating back to the turn of the last century and building mediocrity in its place.

I'm all for the Obama Presidential Library being built here in Chicago, but there are plenty of vacant lots all over this city that can be utilized.

This warrantless destruction of our architectural history is... tasteless.

I don't care if Reagan took a dump in there or not, it is a shame that well-built and beautiful old buildings like this with character are being knocked down for shiny new modern monoliths. Meanwhile, there are plenty of vacant lots and run-down properties that can be razed and built over (ie like what happened with Cabrini Green). How about Dixie Square Mall out in Harvey? Did they knock down that toxic dump yet?

Aside from all that, this whole story sounds like ridiculous bullshit from the Daily Mail. And this is absurd even by their own low standards.

Fri Feb 1, 2013, 05:46 PM

Reagan lived in this building less than one year as a four year old. He grew up in Dixon, Illinois, a small town in western Illinois. The University of Chicago has owned that building and the rest of that block for almost ten years and plans on expanding the hospital on that parcel. It has nothing to do with Obama or his potential library. Furthermore, if this building is so historically significant then why didn't the GOP purchased it a long time ago and preserve it? Reagan's parents moved frequently during his early years and there is probably a half dozen places like this tenement that they lived in for brief periods of time in and around Chicago. The Republicans will lie about anything to smear President Obama. Just sick.
