Too often in Washington today, reaching across the aisle seems as controversial as negotiating with the Taliban,” Clinton, a leading possible 2016 Democratic presidential contender, said at the 2013 American Jewish University lecture series on Monday in Universal City, Calif. “That is not the way democracy is supposed to work.”

Clinton nevertheless said she was optimistic that Republicans and Democrats would reach an immigration reform agreement. She called progress on the issue “wonderful to behold.”

In context, its not at all the way you are making it out to be.

She was describing the Republican mindset, said mindset making it actually true for Democrats.

Had she said what the OP said, it would have been a major problem for her - not to mention far outside anything she has ever said. I hope that the misinterpretation does not go viral in the RW - something that has happened with many many Democrats.

In context what she said is not controversial.

it would kill her candidacy ... and be a complete repudiation of how both she and Bill Clinton have always work to be centrists.

It's a nice way of saying, "I'm not on board with the Republicans like President Obama."

(Sorry if that upsets people. But I find the "bipartisan compromise" b.s. Cynical, perhaps. But real, no doubt.)

We do not not live in a totalitarian regime. The question is how much to compromise on any given issue and how to get the other side to agree to one's own position on said issue. Being a good negotiator is key, knowing when to cajole, when to soothe ruffled feathers, etc. I think Bill was good at playing that game.
