Rep. Tim Huelskamp's amendment will fail, but it did pick up 28 co-sponsors
BY JILLIAN RAYFIELD
In response to the Supreme Courts decision on the Defense of Marriage Act, conservative Rep. Tim Huelskamp, R-Kan., has introduced a measure that would amend the Constitution so that it defines marriage as between a man and a woman.
The bill, called the Federal Marriage Amendment, is quite short:
Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution, nor the constitution of any State, shall be construed to require that marriage or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon any union other than the union of a man and a woman.
Last week, the Supreme Court held that Section 3 of DOMA, which defined marriage as between a man and a woman for the purposes of receiving federal benefits, is unconstitutional.
Though theres no chance that Huelskamps legislation will become law, 28 Republicans have signed on as co-sponsors to it, mostly unsurprising conservatives like Paul Broun, Ga., Trent Franks, Ariz., Louie Gohmert, Texas, Ralph Hall, Texas, Jim Jordan, Ohio, and Steve Stockman, Texas.

(7,800 posts)Thousands of 16 and 17 year olds will turn 18 by November 2014, and they overwhelmingly reject this kind of thing.
While it may rile up their base a bit, the gay marriage issue is now a net negative for the GOP.

(24,422 posts)Yeah, and they got sick of voting on Jobs bills immediately after the 2010 election. Can't worry about jobs when there are religious right-wing nut jobs to pacify! Our governor (Mike Pence) responded to the rulings last week by making clear that we've got to finish passing an anti-gay marriage ban into our state constitution next session as well. They've got to make it crystal clear that they just hate "teh gays"! BTW what is the position on this by GOProud and and Log Cabin Republicans on this initiative?
