Tab for Gov. Perry’s security detail hits $2.8 million for out-of-Texas travel

AUSTIN — The travel cost of Gov. Rick Perry’s security detail for out-of-state trips has risen to $2.8 million, covering the period from his 2010 re-election through late last year.

The latest $120,933 quarterly tab for out-of-state trips includes Perry’s travel to Israel, London, California, Colorado, South Carolina, Louisiana, New Jersey, Mississippi and Washington, D.C.

Perry, who is mulling another run for president, is accompanied by his detail when he makes trips for political events, state business or vacations.

Taxpayers typically don’t foot the bill for Perry’s direct travel costs, but they do pay for the Texas Department of Public Safety security detail.

Perry has rebuffed the idea of covering the security detail’s costs for political trips, as some have urged, saying he is governor wherever he goes. Of the total $2.8 million in travel costs, $1.8 million occurred in August 2011 through January 2012, when Perry was running for the GOP nomination for president.

Just another chance to make a fool of the GOP. Now, what were the 3 branches of the government? Ooops I forgot.

Comedians will get a kick out of this. They live for this kind of crap.

and, so do we! IMHO, just judging as a armchair critic myself, and you know this too, we haven't seen anything, or anyone put into the spotlight who can be a GOP frontrunner. They keep putting these losers at the head of the pack, which suits us Democrats just fine.

I do remember the debates when Perry had that brain fart, I sat on the couch with my wife, and when it happened, my wife and I looked at each other, mouths open in shock, and began to laugh. I laughed so hard my stomach ached.

I'm just about ready for some cheap entertainment again.

time I ran into Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer who was visiting the Ground Zero memorial at the same time as I was. Despite the fact that this was around the same time when Brewer was imposing controversial new laws aimed at hurting minorities in her state, she was walking around unhindered with one guy walking with her and chatting with her, and one what looked like a security person walking about 5-10 feet behind her. She passed right by me and I recognized her right away and looked around to see if anyone else noticed her. No one paid her any attention. I doubt if anyone would pay Rick Perry any attention if they saw him on the street, either.

Rick would do better to try spending his security detail costs on getting his state's constituents some health care. Texas has the highest number of uninsured of all the states.
