Nation's Love Affair with Abusive, Arrogant Icons Speaks Volumes
Donald Trump continues to insinuate himself into American politics, and Americans continue to allow it.
This isn't happening because Trump has a lot of money. The Koch Brothers, Karl Rove's money machine and other funding sources make Trump look like small potatoes. So why does Mitt Romney - and so many others - put up with a man that even a right-wing commentator like George Will describes as a "bloviating ignoramus"?
Don't ask Will. He seems to be baffled himself by the phenomenon. "I do not understand the cost benefit here," he said. "The costs are clear. The benefit - what voter is gonna vote for him (Romney) because he is seen with Donald Trump?"
A few. And maybe more than a few.
The Trumps, Limbaughs and Robertsons of the world are merely creations of society - reflections of our culture's basest tendencies. What do they offer us? No more than a vain promise to do our thinking for us, and a liar's pledge to act in our best interest.
