2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumRomney to launch six state bus tour (including thru Michigan)
The Washington Post reports Mitt Romney "is trying to seize momentum with a five-day bus tour through small towns across six battleground states."
"This will be Romney's most intense campaign swing since the Republican primaries effectively ended in early April. Over the past two months, Romney has spent most of his time raising money at private donor receptions and has been staging just three or four campaign events a week, many of them formal speeches."
Mark Halperin: "Interesting thing about Romney's just-announced battleground state bus trip: (1) It includes Michigan; if Romney can put his father's home state in play, it is an Electoral College game changer; (2) all of these states have small towns and rural areas that are not the President's electoral strength and where Romney can gain an advantage if he runs up the kinds of margins George W. Bush did in 2004; and (3) watch to see if this trip draws network correspondents and/or big-foot print reporters, who, on most every day for the last several months, have been absent from the Romney roadshow. (4) notice what family members and surrogates join the journey and what roles they are assigned."

(35,704 posts)I am thinking a big old 60s station wagon painted with Romney logos and a crate with stuffed dog following the Romney bus tour around.

(36,437 posts)McCain also fought for Michigan hard - until he saw that it was hopeless and gave up on it. It was a big to-do that he was pulling his Michigan ads...and it was after the conventions. Halperin is pretending that making a play for Michigan is some big deal. It's not. He's be admitting defeat if he didn't make a play for it. But Obama will win Michigan by 8-10%. It doesn't cost Halperin anything to make silly comments on what is a fairly standard campaign swing through these states.

(32,146 posts)So Halperin is not just "clowning around". http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/mi/michigan_romney_vs_obama-1811.html

(32,146 posts)You have the typical DU response about polls. If it is good news then the poll is reliable. If it is bad news then the poll over samples Republicans, its an outlier, doesn't do cellphones, the list goes on an on.

(32,146 posts)One poll, the latest, out of three does not make it an "outier". It may be an outlier but just because it does not fall in line with two others does not make it so. Don't be daft.

(1,033 posts)The only ones that have Romney ahead in Michigan are EPIC/MRA polls. Every other one has Obama ahead by a healthy margin. I'm not saying Obama is up 14, like the NBC poll says. That one is probably an outlier, too. But Obama would probably win the state by about 7-10 points if the election were held today. It will take a lot for Mitt "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt" Romney to win in Michigan.

(32,146 posts)As I posted before I think Obama will win MI in November. I am just not one of those who dismiss any poll not favoring my side and salute any poll that I like. Posters said the polls were all wrong in 2010. We saw how that worked out.

(36,437 posts)I dismiss this particular outlier poll which is an obvious outlier even by the evidence you yourself posted. It's as foolish to be alarmed by any poll favoring the other side as it is to dismiss any poll not favoring one's own. I'm doing neither of those things. How about you?
