Hillary Clinton, Shumlin appear at drug abuse event in New Hampshire
Published 5:34 PM EDT Sep 17, 2015
LACONIA, N.H. (AP) Hillary Rodham Clinton says the problem of substance abuse is hurting rural communities and left untreated will only get worse.
...............................
Watch this story
Clinton is promoting a $10 billion initiative to address drug and alcohol abuse, which has roiled many rural communities in New Hampshire. She says the disease needs to be "interrupted and treated" and warns it's "going to get worse" if the U.S. doesn't address it.
Clinton was joined by Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, a Democrat who endorsed her over Sanders. She will pick up the endorsement on Friday of New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan.

(1,169 posts)Who needs a perspective from the black community anyway, right? We should all just shut up and listen to silver spoon Vermonters. They know what is best for us!

(57,349 posts)Richard Tarrant sat on the Board of Trustees Finance and Planning committees, with responsibilities for oversight.
In January 2005, William Boettcher, former chief executive officer of Vermont's Fletcher Allen Health Care, pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges, admitting that he hid the real costs of the hospital's $367 million expansiondubbed the Renaissance Projectfrom state regulators. Tarrant was then removed from the board, along with others who served during the expansion project, but was not implicated in any wrongdoing.

When it comes to scum Tarrant is the kind that covers a cess pit.
Keep digging in it though.

(114,904 posts)cheat his disabled neighbor out of his home? There's a reason shummy is so unpopular here.

(80,708 posts)it even more difficult for people in pain to get it legitimately managed because their doctors are terrified of the draconian DEA.
And both of those are elements of her supposedly "enlightened" 10 billion dollar approach.

(2,004 posts)This is a really good thing for HRC to bring attention to and discuss. These people need treatment, not jailed. This means a lot for people who have family members fighting this disease. HRC just keeps putting out good ideas to help all citizens. Step by step she is laying the groundwork for a campaign with coattails.
Well done to both of them. Glad to see Gov. Hassan on board, too.

(30,481 posts)So easy for some to be immediately dismissive of something of such great importance.
I would say they do so for a couple of reasons, all flowing from your post.
1) They do not have a family member or close friend who is an addict.
2) They do and are still in the anger phase.
3) An addict has stole from them, once again bringing their thoughts to anger instead of understanding. I have actually had an addict steal from me yet never felt anger. I know some can't do that.
4) Petty political reasons.
5) A lack of education and understanding.
I hate seeing people be dismissive about this topic. It hurts as the people here are suppose to be on our side with this.
"she is laying the groundwork for a campaign with coattails." Big time.

(12,081 posts)abandoned mental health in this country. If people could get the medicine and counseling they need drug abuse treatment would work much better. My sister in law has been trying to quit drugs for decades now and her addiction is so strong she simply walks out of rehabilitation centers when the cravings get too strong.

(80,708 posts)Hopefully at the very least she's being honest when she says (off camera) that she intends to leave states alone that have legalized recreational marijuana.
One hopes that her "crusade to fix drug addiction" doesn't mean "send the swat teams into Colorado to round up all the pot smokers, and if they won't go into treatment we give them to our private prison lobbyist pals"

(80,708 posts)somehow I'm not sure she's the right person to "fix" the drug war.
