Remember back in '84 how ruthless the Republicans were with Ferraro's taxes?

Namely her husband's? They forced him to release all his tax returns, even though he wasn't running for office and his wife wasn't even running for President.

Yeah, well...

For Republicans it's "anything goes". For Democrats, it's another story.

'84 was the first election after Reagan did away with the Fairness Doctrine.
It has been like this ever since, and is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.

I was running the Mondale-Ferraro campaign in Champaign, Illinois.

So far the Obama campaign and the Democrats haven't even got close to the screaming and whining that was coming from the Repuglicans about John Zacarro's taxes (Geraldine's husband).

But Ferraro was a real champ -- she took questions from the press for like two or three hours about the taxes and that effectively ended the controversy.

As an Italian American, I remember it quite clearly, even though I was just a kid at the time. I remember thinking, this will be everyone's first thought if you ever succeed at anything: that you are a crook, a mafioso. It was a despicable display. It was also, at the time, a not so subtle message to Cuomo about what was on store for him in 88, if he had any ideas about that.
