2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA Bain Guy Said Romney Paid NO TAXES
FOR TEN YEARS!!!! Randi Rhodes just reported it. Apparently, a friend of Harry Reid who worked with Mitt Romney told the majority leader that Romney paid NO taxes for 10 years. Unreal-no wonder he's never gonna release those tax records.

(31,849 posts)You can bet President Obama's campaign strategist already know this.
And it would not surprise me if the information was fed to them BY the gop!

(1,374 posts)Asking legitimate questions about Romney's tax returns should never be associated with the Birthers.
Obama released his authentic BC in '08 but Birthers rejected it based on lies. They won't even let it go after Obama released the long-form BC. No evidence will ever change their mind.
Romney has only released a few tax returns, but we feel he should release more and be transparent like his Father - who started the trend of politicians releasing multiple years of tax returns.
The tax returns are a legitimate issue. The BC is not a legitimate issue. Don't associate the two please because some people will believe we are just making up an illegitimate issue like the Birthers have done.
This meme may be funny to us and in other liberal circles but if it filters out into the mainstream then it could hurt the possibility of getting answers to the valid questions about Romney's tax returns.

(28,498 posts)I was suggesting anti-Mitters could shove their "birther" charade back at them and put them on the defensive with their own "political" strategy.
I would like to hear their defense about why Romney hasn't released his returns, and constantly reminding them could put the seed of doubt in some minds...

(1,374 posts)...those who don't pay close attention to politics. I believe those are mostly the so-called Independents who could very well decide the election.
I can see how it would be a good way of going after righties and putting them on the defensive but those who support Romney already have a low opinion of their candidate. They are overwhelmingly motivated by getting rid of Obama. Mitt could eat a live baby and they'd still vote for him.
I think the risk far outweighs the reward because you can't control who sees it and this meme may become accepted by popular culture. If we're not careful with messaging, the next thing you know CNN and other MSM outlets are calling us "Taxers" and associating us with Birthers - which is obviously not a fair comparison.
Everyone needs to know that Romney's tax returns is a legitimate issue. This meme may undermine that effort.

(35,015 posts)How do we know it isn't the truth? The Romney can't come out and claim it's a lie, otherwise they'll have to release the tax returns to prove it's a lie, which they won't do. Genius.
Thanks for your concern.

(35,015 posts)Got it and I agree, there should be no assocation between the two. The tax returns are a legitimate issue.

(13,891 posts)nothing in taxes and I reduced my food budget and my health budget so I could afford to pay mine? I don't think this is going to go over well. Mitt is going to say that he did nothing illegal...just took advantage of the loopholes in the tax code. Fine, except there are no lookholes for middle class folks, you asshole. Living in a Democratic society means that you contribute your fair share...a concept that is alien to Mitt.

(35,300 posts)"A month or so ago, he said, a person who had invested with Bain Capital called his office.
" 'Harry, he didn't pay any taxes for 10 years,' Reid recounted the person as saying."
The friend was apparently just some nameless guy who called Reid.
Romney's coworker was just a Bain investor. Whether he invested in 1998, 2000, or 2010 ... No word.
It's called blowback when the CIA does it: They release rumors and false or spurious information to the enemy, the enemy takes it and feeds it back to the CIA informant, who reports it back to the CIA as truth.
Always question your sources. Take the "you should drink 8 glasses of water a day" health advice. A year or two ago somebody decided to source that claim. He questioned his assumptions. The guy worked his way back through the '00s, the '90s, the '80s, the '70s, and the '60s, everybody citing somebody who cited somebody who cited somebody. Finally it was tracked back to a 1950s extension pamphlet who cited somebody. The somebody, it turned out, was a food scientists who was asked to estimate how much water a typical person probably took in, from all sources in a typical day--that would be glasses of water, your morning coffee, milk, moisture in your oatmeal and in you peas and salad and in your apple pie--and guessed 8 8-oz glasses. 60 years of profound medical advice based on a misunderstanding of an extension scientist's ad hoc estimate of total water consumption.

(305 posts)I don't care if he manipulated the system to pay little to no taxes on his investments. Romney has been essentially retired since 99 or 2002 depending on who you believe. He didn't take a salary as Govenor of Mass. So what everyone is bitching about is capital gains of investments. I heard that the IRS has audited him twice, and since no one has reported any fines or indiscretions I am assuming that no one found fault in the returns. Has anyone said that Romney did anything illegal? At worst, Romney's lawyers manipulated the system to give their client the best possible outcome. That is the sole job of tax attorney. I find this debate about his returns to be the highest form of navel gazing, he is a rich guy, get over it. We have real issues going on Syria(not a peep), No jobs, a weak overall economy, out of control debt, and this is what we are talking about.
Syria-so do you want us in another war? I don't
No Jobs? Hmmmm what is it now 28 straight months of job growth DESPITE the republican party's worst efforts to kill the economy for political gain.
The Debt...The Bush Tax Cuts for the Rich Have Added $1,115,257,758,983 to Our National Debt Since 2001...the democrats are going to do something about your big debt problem-you know the one that all of you guys suddenly became so concerned with after running it up with those UNPAID tax cuts, medicare part D and two UNPAID for wars.
anything else?

(305 posts)The only thing I can think is that Obama has no plans for a second term. I can't think of one interesting policy intiative that either side has come up with. It's a pissing match with no substance.

(305 posts)I would also like to hear the President's, I follow politics pretty close, and i couldn't tell you what his is. Does he want another round of stimulas? Does he want a federal policy that allows for gay right's in every state? does he have a plan for if Syria and Turkey go at it? I don't know these things. I would love to hear a debate over it.
