Frank Bruni: Hillary Clinton’s Pajama Party

By Frank Bruni, The New York Times

She had a law career, an ambitious agenda as first lady, an industrious stint in the Senate, those years and miles as secretary of state.

And it has come to this: In a bid to seem less stuffy and turn the page on a beleaguered (yet again) presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton is chatting with Lena Dunham about the singer Lenny Kravitz’s penis.

You can watch the video yourself. It’s a jokey promotion for an interview of Clinton just published in a new newsletter that Dunham is putting out. You can also see a comedic sketch of Dunham’s arrival at Clinton’s campaign headquarters in Brooklyn and the make-believe refusal of a Clinton gatekeeper to let her in. There’s even a cameo by Amy Schumer.

The interview itself covers Clinton’s biography and some serious terrain, including feminism and the relationship between African-Americans and the police.

.....(snip).....

But still I’m baffled. How can her response to charges that she’s too packaged and calculating be this packaged and calculated? And to counter her image as entrenched political royalty, why would she enlist stars whose presence merely emphasizes her pull with, and membership in, the glittery world of celebrity?

“Insane,” said one Democratic operative when I sought his reaction. ..................(more)

Bill Clinton loved the company of famous people. George Walker Bush eschewed the company of famous people. Barack Obama seems to be in the middle.

Enjoying the company of famous people doesn't reveal a lot about people.

have all appeared on nationally televised talk shows and/or in comedy bits, but when Hillary does it it's different. Somehow it's considered more calculated.

It looks staged. I guess its to show Hillary has a sense of humor--like she might be joking the way a mother would with a daughter--but, given what went on with Bill and Monica, it seems in poor taste to be talking about Lenny's stuff falling out of his pants.

I don't think it was a good strategy for her campaign, but I imagine that many people thought it was a warm and fuzzy moment.

I prefer that Hillary was just playing Funny with a "Daughter Type" that fit their Campaign Spin to get Hillary Out there "Reaching Out to the Young." But, with a nasty reminder of the Clinton Years that was Lurking that her Campaign somehow didn't figure out ....that Older Voters/Supporters of Clinton Years might remember.

But, then....she's reaching out to the YOUNG who don't remember those years so....her Campaign thinks "All is Good."

I don't see the nexus between Lenny Kravitz inadvertently showing his junk and Bill Clinton's infelicities.

Bill & Monica.

Those of us who worked to get Bill Clinton Elected and his Staffers and Others who'd supported him through Whitewater and the other Repub Investigations were pretty upset when the full story of what Bill did (showing his stuff) in that room off the Oval Office where Presidents Preside over Official Business heard about "cigars, showing stuff and other antics" that went on in the Lewinsky Scandal.

Hillary really should have used more discretion or she was duped into that show because she didn't know better about Dunham's background to be better on guard and allowing herself to be "set up."

but what do you think that means about Hillary/Bill Presidency Third Term....? If he can't keep it in his pocket?

He WILL BE part of the White House. And one is never too old to "get ideas." And, many of us are too tired of the Clinton Scandals to want to go through this again.

Cigars....Fantasy...rooms Off the Oval Office....

Hey...I was of an age that was a supportive of Clinton as young people were for Obama. Fortunately, Obama (as far as we know) wasn't using cigars on interns in the ante-room off the Presidential Oval Office.

But, as you sort of alluded to....certain men's drives find creative ways to fulfill it. One is Never too Old ...if they are Creative...and Ultimate Power leads many to be Creative in many ways that ordinary people aren't privy to.
